Overall it isn't a bad thing, but on a societal level it makes life harder for the working population supporting the elderly. From what I've read on working culture in Japan it's hard enough to begin with.

It's been becoming like how they describe in Northern Europe over the last 15 years though. Things are better than the US in terms of statutory rights and work culture, but people are worse off in real terms than pre-2008.
