What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?

  • I just tried it as I was intrigued, but it didn't go so well.
    The first thing it did was complain about not being able to connect to its notifications server, so I couldn't enable notifications... even looked into the app permissions and there was nothing preventing it from pushing notifications.
    Then I wanted to see which OSS was used and that link didn't work. (possible license violation?)
    After that I wanted to try the mode where you can communicate locally through BLE and all that. Enabling that feature causes the app to just crash when opening it.

    • YSK: there's a type of common hallucination (often scary) that happens shortly after waking up. You can move and talk while seeing it and it can last between a few seconds up to a minute

  • Funniest thing was when I registered on a website which parsed the \0 sequence and hence truncated the password in the background unbeknownst to me. This way you could circumvent the minimum length and creare a one character password.

  • ^ That didn't happen before. It's fixed by opening the account list. The subscription tab only shows a timeout error now all the time and the bookmark button is missing :(

    EDIT: oh, just found the swipe actions. Some thoughts on that: a two-staged swipe-action isn't very intuitive and will lead to the wrong action being triggered more often than not. Maybe make a left swipe bookmark and right swipe upvote. With the bookmark swipe I can't unbookmark anymore and even if I could, there would be no indication right away.

  • yeah... I think this exactly the kind of stuff that annoys people and discourages people to join. Now that they moved here they get told they did it wrong because they chose the wrong instance... despite everyone first saying it doesn't matter and you shouldn't think too hard about your choice because "federation, yay!"
