  • Honestly I don't think we'll have AGI until we can fully merge meat space and cyber space. Once we can simply plug our brains into a computer and fully interact with it then we may see AGI.

Obviously we're not where near that level of man machine integration, I doubt we'll see even the slightest chance of it being possible for at least 10 years and the very earliest. But when we do get there it's a distinct chance that it's more of a Borg situation where the computer takes a parasitic role than a symbiotic role.

But by the time we are able to fully integrate computers into our brains I believe we will have trained A.I. systems enough to learn by interaction and observation. So being plugged directly into the human brain it could take prior knowledge of genome mapping and other related tasks and apply them to mapping our brains and possibly growing artificial brains to achieve self awareness and independent thought.

Or we'll just nuke ourselves out of existence and that will be that.

  • GrapheneOS can sandbox apps to use the Google services only with permitted apps.

Note I don't actually have a GrapheneOS capable phone at the moment, but I've been getting familiar with it in hopes of switching soon, so I'm just relaying what I've read.

  • Yeah killing the sms function was basically a deal breaker for me, no matter how much I tried I could only get three people to use Signal, the rest were all sms. When the sms feature was removed 2 of the 3 dropped Signal completely, so now the only person I know who still uses it is my mom and even she still flips back and forth between Signal and Google messages when texting me.

I still have Signal on my phone and suggest it people when they ask how to contact me, but everyone just wants to text my phone number.

  • Not entirely, my ISP is a family owned regional cable company and they took the grant and have rolled out fiber across multiple counties.

I get what you're saying about the mega corps, yeah they just pocket a lot of the money. But the smaller ISPs are being smart and investing in their infrastructure to be able to complete.

  • True, and I was drawing on anecdotal evidence that I didn't elaborate on in my original comment. While I know there are people who do not do well or enjoy work from home, I have yet to meet those people, all my coworkers and friend group are loving work from home.

So a more accurate statement would have been, based on my personal experience along with with coworkers and my friend circle this study is B.S.

  • I have a buddy in Japan who was a foreign exchange student here in the U.S. years ago. When he went back home I had to use Line to talk to him, I tried for years to get him to use Signal and after years of nagging he agreed to start using Discord..... well at least it's not Whatsapp.....

  • Yeah in my teens and early 20's I basically lived on Pepsi, mountain dew, and Gatorade. How I avoided kidney stones I'll never know.

In my 20's I became a self-employed courier with a contract for one long route and then anything I could pick up on the side. After a while I started talking a small Dr pepper and a large bottle of water with me every night. I basically forced myself to drink more water since I was trapped in my car for hours on a tight schedule and the Dr pepper didn't last long.

Now at 41 I mainly drink water and hot tea. I still enjoy a mini can of Dr pepper once in a while but once or twice a week is enough for me.

  • Yep my work laptop is win11, this happens every time. I just wait till the end of the day, click update and shut down, let the dog out and then give her breakfast (I work nights) then go back and shut down from lock screen.

Meanwhile on my Linux laptop, "downloading critical system files" SUDO shut down, "whatever you say boss" and 10 seconds later it's off.

  • I admit I don't watch every video, I'm subscribed but I just kind of let videos come to my home feed and watch that way. I mainly use YT as background noise while doing something else.

His reasoning makes sense, so I guess I'll just continue to watch on YT since I have no desire to join FP. Thanks for the info!
