  • That's a different phenomenon from the picture. The picture shows a body in the vitreous jelly. The article you linked is a "brain filling in gaps" phenomenon.

Still, very cool article. I had never read about that.

  • "If A then B" means if A is true, then B is guaranteed to be true. Note that if B is true and A is false, "if A then B" is still true.

"B only if A" means the only way for B to be true is for A to be true. It's weird, but it has the inverse truth table as "(not A) and B".

  • Ask for help here if you need to. Don't stress about finding the right place. Find a comfortable place.

Edit: sorry. I didn't see the word "professional" in your post at first. Others have given you better advice. Crisis doesn't always mean self-harm. There are places to talk about bills, marriage, depression, loneliness, etc.

    How can we help?

  • Was an unextreme solution mentioned? I don't see one. It seems very reasonable.

What would more extreme, but not inappropriate, is for Valve to send a cease and desist to stop Canonical from using the Steam logo on a package Valve does not maintain. I don't think that's warranted. But calling a little text clarification "extreme" is nonsense.

But Canonical using that logo is pretty misleading. I notice the thumbnail adds some Canonical-flare to the logo, but it's not there on snapcraft.

  • The people clowning on him were posting "I have a bad idea I'm willing to defend."

This became indistinguishable from Chowder fans posting "I have a bad idea I'm willing to defend" but their shenanigans are cruel and tragic.

  • Good luck putting that genie in a bottle.

  • Now I'm picturing an SNL-type sketch where the judge is the "this isn't how any of this works" geico lady, and the jury insists that jail is best.

Of course Trump's lawyers would try to help, but make it worse. And the plaintiff's lawyers are just eating popcorn.

  • I mean, they can say it. It would be pretty funny.

  • Did all the Americans here have their beans and corn for breakfast, as is tradition?

  • Yeah, come to think of it, "moving the decimal" is wrong too. There must be a term for moving the decimal in the "one minus x" complement.

  • It's very difficult to quote Douglas Adams without sounding like you're pandering to nerd culture. I don't think AI could pull it off.

I don't know what to think of someone who could blast off accusations like this, either.

Edit: Oh. The accusation is even dumber. It's just the header OP wrote. That was just direct to the point writing. AI or no, who cares about two tiny paragraphs.

Edit: Filled in the words my brain thought were there for everybody.

  • The proportion is about 0.998, and the parent post had it at 0.9998. You move the decimal point by adding 9s. There was one too many. It was off by a decimal place.

Whether you would call that "off by decimal place" or not, it is certainly larger than being off by "a tenth of a percent". That would mean the error bars of number 0.9998 ± 10% [edit: oops, did i miss a decimal place there. i'll leave it] would just close the gap.

I like the proportion of the smear, aka, the whole point of your post. I never heard it in those terms. It reminds me of the one where if the earth were a basketball, the moon would be a tennis ball about 9 feet away. I'll calc out the percent errors if anyone cares.

  • Ok, thank you. When you said

I don’t like them, and I expected that was unpopular ;)

I thought you were backing off of the ban position. That's the only thing I'm interested in arguing. Not liking the distracting ones doesn't seem that unpopular. If I thought that were your position, I would have never posted in this thread.

I was hoping that someone else would chime in. I'm not trying to argue you with you, fmstrat. I was just hoping for more engagement than a dozen downvotes. It's clear that you are not here to argue. But that doesn't mean I can't. This is an opinion forum. I don't care if OP argues. I want to.

  • So any sex position where the balls are higher than the penis could be called "kangy style"?

  • This goes by the pleasant sounding scientific name of "traumatic insemination".

  • The sun is about 1000 times the mass of Jupiter. You're off a decimal place.

Edit: That in and of itself is a quotable fact. The real number rounds to 1053. So it's about 5% off. It's a meaningless coincidence.

Better ones include that our moon can produce both total and annular eclipses, and (geometrically) all the other planets fit between the earth and moon, but not by much.

  • I hope they're just being assholes. That's not unbelievable.

Part of me wonders what they are hiding. They've been pretty proud of atrocities at the border before. Again, I hope they're just being assholes.
