  • The entire opening scene of Beverly Hills Cop is Axel Foley trying to stop a truckload of cigarettes without government tax stamps. Bart Simpson also stored a truckload of Laramie 100 cigarettes in his room on behalf of his boss Fat Tony which they lifted off a truck for the same purpose.

  • Are you using synergy? I have that but don’t use it anymore since they changed their code and I began to feel like a beta tester, but your point stands nonetheless. I always use Wayland on VMs but my main machine is X11 because I keep running into edge cases that make using Wayland inconvenient.

  • The proof is the status quo. Video texts from Android users look bad on an iPhone. Apple could choose to fall back to RCS instead of SMS from iMessage. RCS would offer better video quality than SMS, which overall improves the interoperability of all phones. Because RCS is a standard and the natural successor to SMS, refusing to support the standard makes it less likely to succeed, with the intent of defending their dominant market share.

  • Looks like there are two separate issues addressed in the articles. 1. You have to approve USB devices that are plugged into your Mac. I believe the fix is to unplug USB devices and plug them back in. 2. Microsoft Defender is crashing CUPS unless you manually give it full disk access. Either give it full disk access or remove Microsoft Defender from your Mac.

ETA: I just checked and I’m ok 14.4. No problems printing but it did ask me to confirm that I trusted every new USB device that I plug in.

  • It was about 50/50, but fortunately everything that didn’t work had upgrades to universal or Apple silicon available. I imagine things were rougher for the early adopters. What surprised me the most was being able to run Windows Steam via Whisky with very little drama.

  • I’m sympathetic to this line of thinking but it ignores the expulsion of Jews from nearly all the other Arab countries after the foundation of Israel, and these are significant numbers, around 900,000 people until the 1960s. Around 700,000 Palestinians were likewise forcibly displaced in 1948. This is more or less like the population swap that took place in India after the British left, leading to the creation of Pakistan and Bangladesh.

  • It just needs to be better than the Intel CPUs with iGPU that power most laptops. Increased perf per watt is the first goal. Cloud service providers will follow suit, leaving x86 gaming machines as an edge use case. Once PS6 or PS7 runs on ARM then it’s game over.

  • I recently bought an Apple Silicon laptop and I’ve noticed that only a handful of my apps are run in Intel translation mode. Intel apps are significantly slower to launch because they front load the code translation, but I’ve been surprised to see how much software is fully native or universal now. Apple has done a good job giving developers the tools to write code that is portable, but it’s been stretching the pain over servers revision cycles. For example dropping 32bit software support two versions ago. I am not convinced Microsoft has the nerve to break compatibility but Linux will be fine.

  • I’m the weirdo who regularly uses all three. I think a lot of Mac people use one screen because MacOS has better desktop switching than the other two OS, especially if you’re using a trackpad. I personally use two screens but have used as many as three.

  • Not really the same thing. Biden beat Trump in California by 30 points in 2020. Hilary did the same in 2016. Not a chance Garvey wins in a national election. He only did as well as he did in the primary because we had something like 25% voter turnout.
