Liquid Trees

  • "let's uproot all these trees and invade this space. and when the roots of the few remaining trees do what they are supposed to do, let's blame them for 'ruining' human infrastructure!"

  • Proponents say detailed demographic information is crucial for the targeted implementation of India's social justice programmes, including earmarking nearly half of all university seats and government jobs for socially disadvantaged communities.

some context: people of all the "lower" (sic) castes receive special privileges in the form of reservations for university and government jobs, as well as financial incentives to foster greater equity in society.

the purpose of such a census is to understand how best to administer such programs (rather than perpetuating the social ills of the caste system).

  • And giving more tax breaks to companies that stay and sell in the US?

that's technically what tariffs do. topologically, it's the same thing: using policy to give a price advantage to domestic producers.

talk about shopping locally and so forth.

talk gets one only so far. when those numbers start to chomp into the household budget, everyone forsakes the "made in..." label in favour of the price tag.

  • but isn't that just the most efficient arrangement in a crowded forest where each tree elbows its neighbours out of the way for whatever sunlight they can get?

why waste energy in making branches and leaves low down when they'll forever be in the shade?

  • years ago, i came across the phrase "resting bitch face" online somewhere. i don't know in what context i read it or where, but i do remember being utterly confused by the concept. like, what even is that phrase supposed to mean?!

and that consternation had only deepened and strengthened right up to the recent past when photos of jd vance began to surface. now it's 100% clear what the author of that long-forgotten post must have meant when they typed out those three little words.

  • lichess.org is a fantastic online chess platform for players of all skill levels. it's free and---what's more--it's ad-free (unlike the parasitic organisation that's squatting on the chess.com domain).

it has one-on-one on-demand match-ups, tournaments, puzzles, user-published training courses, multiple chess variants, and so much more.

it's one of only two online resources to which i deem donating regularly worthwhile (the other being wikipedia).

do check it out. chess is one really healthy mental habit to inculcate.
