  • well i wear ear plugs a lot for work and I can't do it. plus, your brain raises the perceived volume of sounds after just a few minutes and so while you are preventing damage from loud sounds, the isolation effect isn't really that significant

  • yeah, I'm sure that being an Indian immigrant gives you access to a business community. probably nice for finding clients and partners, etc. the business culture within that community would be some mix of American and Indian.

  • I don't know if there are any good examples of autocracies working better than democracies.

China looks good right now but it's real estate market is about to collapse in a way that has probably not been seen before in American markets in a long time.

The corruption in these countries is almost universal as the ruling bodies have nothing checking against them and are often staffed with shoe-ins who are there to make money. much of the bureaucracy doesn't even function without the corruption. theft and extortion are toothpicks holding the system together.

The US government is corrupt as fuck, but I don't think Americans comprehend the nature of corruption outside of the western world. it really is another type of beast.

  • yeah. as an American, I think haggle culture is annoying as hell. it's completely unnecessary. they'll tell you the price is really high, and then you'll ask for something really low, and then they'll meet you in the middle where the price is supposed to be. what the hell was the point?

it's partly an ego thing. if you're selling something, and you don't give them at least some inconsequential discount, they're going to feel like they got ripped off. even if you're giving them an honest price that they won't find anywhere else, they need to buy it at a price that's lower than what is offered. The buyer and seller both need to feel that they are smart because they moved the price from what the other person wanted.

selling your motorbike or camera gear on Facebook is absolute hell. 90% of the messages you get will be wasting your time. "hello, I would like to buy your motorcycle for $40". haggle spam, basically. oftentimes they will agree to some price and then actually show up to your place, stare at the bike for an hour, and then change their bid to something so low that it is not sensible.

I could list examples for hours.

  • The Democrats don't tend to immediately back out of whatever direction the previous Republicans set the country in. maybe it has something to do with not being wasteful or respecting democracy or I don't know . I'd imagine this New foreign policy will last for 20 years.

  • their shadowban algorithm is completely broken. it seems you can get banned at random after 10 years just for having the wrong ip address or vpn. there's nothing you can do about it. nobody is reading any of the appeals that are submitted. ive been appealing for a year now. they do not care.
