Comments of no substance on the side of popular opinion get upvotes, and waves of downvotes come for anyone who disagrees even a little, and even if they do it in a reasonable way.

Lemmy seems much worse for this than reddit TBH.

There's a number of topics about which any dissent is met with vehement derision. As in those engaging in wrong think are assholes.

I don't really know of course but I suspect it's because lemmy has a narrower demographic than reddit. Opinions are just generally more homogeneous. I guess I'm describing an echo chamber.

You can't make vaccinations "mandatory", but you can make them the basic benchmark for participation in society.

In Ontario and New Brunswick, proof of vaccination is already required for children to attend school. But parents can get an exemption in both provinces for medical, religious or philosophical reasons, as long as they fill out a form.

This right here is the problem. Kids should need vaccinations to go to school or to receive government benefits of any kind, unless there is a firm medical reason that precludes them. Religious or philosophical excuses are not sufficient. If you don't want to get vaccinated then you don't want to participate in modern society.

It's easy to make the mistake of overestimating Trump's strategy when trying to understand his behavior.

Since getting elected he just doesn't give a fuck. He's got a decade to live at best and he get's to ride it out in luxury with the entire world as his play thing.

He got elected by saying he would implement tariffs, gut government services, and be mean to poor people. He's been doing exactly those things.

The tariff announcements just stoke angst. Imagine a narcissist being able to fire off a "truth" and the whole world descending in to chaos for a week. That's it. Like a child poking an ants nest.

From reading headlines here on Lemmy I know the Florida governor was threatening charges but IDK what really happened. My impression was that they were expecting support from the Trump admin but it didn't really materialise and the US wasn't the safe harbour they had hoped for.

Yeah I'm not an expert on the Tate brothers and I'm not going to search them up.

IIRC they were in Romania and when the Trump admin landed in January the brothers some how got special leave to travel on the proviso they returned for their hearings later. They went to Florida thinking that they would get looked after by the Trump admin, but it didn't go very well and the governor of Florida was threatening charges in the US.

So to my knowledge there was no formal "asylum" but they were banking on their ideology aligning with Trumps.

I don't think they're still in the US.

Have you considered that as the host, you're the only person who is not anonymous?

If someone did upload something illegal, and share it with a community, only one member of that community needs to get busted for you as the host to be identified as the "source".

I'm aware that in civil cases hosts are liable for the content they host, but criminally? IDK.

No, there isn't a solution.

You can't ethically provide anonymous no-knowledge hosting.

So you've built a platform with an ideal use case that you're absolutely opposed to but have no mechanism to control or even detect.

So naively then.

Usually you just keep logs and then it's up to the police to enforce, obviously not anonymous though.

I care about privacy and I'll never use crypto.
