  • Of course we can't know who all those non-voters wanted to win, but I'd rather not imply that nearly half of all americans voted for him.

Who gives a shit? Those non-voters made an active choice to not matter. Makes sense to respect that choice and ignore their existence.

People always bring this up as if it's some indication that things arent quite as bad as they seem. Why? Americans chose this in every way that matters.

  • He phrased it wrong but he's sort of right. If Americans knew how to leverage their own political system , as designed by the founding fathers, to their advantage in a focused and rational way, we wouldn't be here. Could it have been better? Sure, but ultimately there is no democratic system that can protect voters from themselves. Democracies grsnt the people immense power, including the power to destroy their own democracy. That's what Americans have chosen.

  • Half the country supports this and thinks the government doesn't do anything. They've completely bought into the right wing narrative. This was the inevitable conclusion to that. Now these ghouls are going to break everything.

Even if Democrats got elected now, the damage to institutions will take decades to fix. And most of the country is barely aware of any of it.

  • There's nothing for us to do that would constitute a blink. It's not like there are specific KPIs around border security he wants us to hit. We have to impose retaliatory tariffs because there's literally no other option.

  • Why is the job of these guys to somehow dive on the grenade at this stage? American voted for this. Whether these people resign or make whatever glorious last stand you envision doesn't matter. This is happening.

  • Most likely Reuters just got that March 1 date wrong. A bad source or whatever.

But it's also a fact that Trump just doesn't have a coherent communications strategy and might not have told his press secretary he changed his mind. So I guess 60/40 odds that there will be tariffs in the morning.

  • There's actually no point. Like literally. We're 10 days into this shit show. By the time of the midterms try to imagine how much sheer bullshit, how many should-be-scandals will have come and gone. Nobody will even remember this in 2 years time.

  • His base turning on him 1) requires that they admit they were duped which they can't since their whole identities are tied up in MAGA and 2) barely matters at this point. Despite his bullshitting hes not running again. He doesn't need them anymore. None of this matters.

  • You have to establish in law and in the minds of the people that the government has a duty to provide affordable health care for it's people. Every other developed nation (and many developing ones) have figured it out. Americans have not, like at all.

  • If you're Denmark, you don't have the luxury of ignoring this. Trump will escalate this before it's resolved. My guess is he'll order the military to stop paying for the US military base in Greenland, start operations that exceed what is in the agreement, and basically try to provoke a response to use as pretense for further escalation. It's already gone too far for Trump to just back down.

  • I'll make a counterpoint, honestly, conservative spaces aren't handling the stopping all federal grants things well.

Lots of fiscal conservatives are suddenly having their stomachs drop realizing that Trump could actually cause a depression doing this kind of dumb shit.

I'm actually beginning to be skeptical of how much of this kind of insane shit they'll actually put up with, because a lot of conservative people seemingly are actually loudly saying "Wait a minute, this could actually be really bad..."

They always, always fall in line.

Even if they continue their idle consternation, if the election were held again today they would all vote identically.

I'll be happy to be proven wrong.
