I'm a fan. It's not perfect but I try to look there first before I go to YouTube.

I hate that these articles are always couched in excusatory language like, "While motivated by a legitimate concern..."

These people are not your friends, they're your enemies. Don't accept their frame in the argument.

One thing that's tricky with alternatives is just the massive bandwidth needed. You don't need nearly as much for lemmy or mastodon

The climate is definitely different. You are right overall. But some places like New York or Chicago are both hotter and colder depending on the time of year.

Naive. First off there are many places with very good technical service where you won't have issue. And secondly there are ways to do it well. Do it through a firm, do it through a friend from there. There are options. I'm certain there are countries and firms where they are absolutely not obliged to tell some German lawyer who owns the domain.

Yup. Absolutely cowardly. I very much doubt they talked to a decent lawyer. A lot of lawyers (perhaps most) out there will give you dumb opinions, like, "Oh, that sounds a bit wishy-washy to me. I would advise it." Without actually properly sitting down and saying, "Yes it's illegal (or no it's not) in this jurisdiction, based on this interpretation of the law. There have been some cases that suggest this interpretation, etc."

That's not to say the answer is always possible to know. Maybe there hasn't been any similar cases to test some legal interpretation. But the moment these people trot out vague moralizing answers or answers that seem too simple you know they're full of it.

A lot of things are possible if you talk to a decent lawyer that has metaphorical big balls.

Yes. They're cowards. I don't know if they were receiving any threats or not. But if people can sue you they'll sue you. They won't threaten to. They weren't even hosting the community themselves. Sadly I'm gonna have to set up an account on another instance.

Yeah but the majority of bots out there are going after easy prey. Honestly, if you use public key authentication with ssh you should be fine, even if it is on port 22. But it does of course clog up access logs.

A lot of devs are in it because it is a decent paying job. But they don't really live and breath this stuff. And they certainly don't share our philosophy.

Https and a server. If hosting at home just leave a high numbered port open. If on a vps then you should be able to use any port you want.

I'm more sympathetic to letting people choose to abort fetuses with clear genetic or physical problems.The world isn't made a better place by more people with down syndrome. Very early genetic testing is helpful here.

However, not letting these people who do exist, and to some extent will probably always exist, live full enriched lives to the extent that they are able is rather horrible.
