  • My personal theory on it is that what they really want is a device with an actually clear screen kinda like a Hololens, but not shitty and huge. Unfortunately technological hurdles prevented them from doing that, so this was their solve.

I suspect this eyes-through-the-device form factor is philosophically a branding element to them so they're faking it until it can be real to maintain some consistency.

I could be totally wrong though and it's more simply trying to "humanize" the things or some such. They're an idiosyncratic company sometimes. I would also not be surprised if they release a cheaper model in the future without it.

  • Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence

  • I think that's a fair take. This product category needs people willing to throw boatloads of cash at it for an extended period of time and there's only so many companies capable and willing to do that. I think if another company had bought them, there's a very good chance they would have quit by now. I'm not sure Google would have stuck it out this long, they love acquiring and then murdering products.

  • I feel like they could have cut down on the weight and price a considerable amount by not having that goofy screen on the front. Probably a bump to battery life too.

  • Yeah it's pretty wild how bad search results have been lately. The unfettered proliferation of AI bullshit on the internet is gonna have some really goddamn irritating impacts on just about everything I think.

  • Oh interesting, thanks for the clarification

  • Yeah zips have no mechanism to prevent brute forcing as far as I'm aware. You can attempt as many passwords as you want as frequently as you want without any sort of rate limit.

  • Most decent new cars don't have any major issues that would strand you on the side of the road for the first 10 years

  • Yeah it probably is in terms of an off the shelf, purpose built option with no tinkering. They're pretty snappy as well. Decent hardware in there it seems.

We have an ATV but our wireless network is kinda shit and we kept having connectivity issues between the ATV and the Plex server we were running on the Mini so we just went all in on running the Mini as the media player and Plex server in one to avoid it. Bonus was that we now have a very capable console game emulator hooked up to the TV too. Also we just ditched our last streaming subscription so all we were using the ATV for was the Plex app.

It's a bit overkill but I will say as a server and emulator the new apple silicon minis are great. Zero fan noise ever and they sip electricity and run really cool.

  • That country would look like Syria in your delusional reality

  • Even a "normal" user needs to chill out a bit when they start reliably hitting a (for example) 3-post-a-minute threshold.

  • You may not be an anti vaxer, but you're still a jerk

  • I think they know the original price is bad but also that there's a significant chunk of people who either don't care or will forget to call in about a price reduction. They've probably figured out a fairly reliable figure as to what percent of their customers will or won't haggle and run revenue projections off of that.

  • Yeah I was getting fed up with apps and boxes said fuck it and am running a mac mini hooked up to a shitload of storage now and it's been great. Plays media, works as a competent file server for said media, and emulates a bunch of console games. We don't use anything else now.

  • Yep same shit with Comcast. I'm very pleased to no longer be a customer.

  • Yep that’s Comcast. You have to call annually and threaten to cancel to get a semi reasonable price for cable and/or internet.

  • I’d expect another big exodus around then.

  • They also just barely avoided voting for a fucking pedophile who would go cruising for little girls at the mall to the extent that they had to ban him. That state is backwards as all fuck.

  • More republican virtue signaling bullshit

    Also this was pretty lulzy:

Arizona State Rep. David Marshall, R-Snowflake, and four co-sponsors have introduced House Bill 2121, prohibiting cell-cultured animal products.

I thought the article was dunking on him at first, but it turns out Snowflake isn't just a conservative state of mind, it's also a small town in Arizona.
