  • That highschool never ended for most people and the shitty cliques and drama continue for decades.

Bowling For Soup said it better than I ever could:

The whole damn world is just as obsessed
\ With who's the best dressed and who's havin' sex Who's got the money, who gets the honeys
    \ Who's kinda cute and who's just a mess

And you still don't have the right look
\ And you don't have the right friends
\ Nothin' changes but the faces, the names and the trends
    High school never ends

  • Somewhat fucked, but not to a terminal degree.

Privacy: The thief would gain access to graphic material of my girlfriend and I doing naked things that would confuse grandparents and excite therapists.

Security: My phone is logged into my emails l, so I'd have to react quickly to cut it off.

2fa: No issues, as I can easily migrate to a different device.

Billing: No issue. It takes 5 seconds to block the SIM.

My main concern is the short-lived email access they would gain. While the inbox does not contain anything horrible, they would be able to reset some passwords, so if my phone was stolen my number one priorities would be to get it my PC to lock out and erase the phone, change mail password, and check All of my user accounts whether they'd been compromised.

  • I have no research to back this up, but I think it's just a glitch that isn't detrimental to passing on one's genes, so the trait got to stay around. Not everyone has it.

But if I were to hypothesize an evolutionary benefit, maybe it is a good thing to sneeze out all the fungal spores from your cave once you emerge. But then again, if it was important, shouldn't this also induce coughing?

  • The answer is probably "no", but.... Any interest in rolling your own? I once wrote a webcomic engine for a friend, and it was pretty trivial: a simple mod_perl script that grabbed a template and substituted a codeword with the picture the client requested.

Nothing fancy and pretty lightweight. My friend uploaded any new comics via FTP and made some minor changes to the template from time to time. It did the job well.

  • Simplified explanation (shut up, Richard Stallman) : It's an operating system. In the same way a PC (or any other computer) has Windows (or OsX/MacOS, android, et.al.) as the connecting layer between the hardware and individual programs.

Linux can serve this role as well, and as it's free and open source, it's particularly popular among the tech and privacy enthusiasts here on Lemmy. Some use it for everything, some use it alongside windows (dualbooting), and some use it in a professional setting.

Linux is especially common on servers, but it's also gaining a lot of ground in the desktop space as well. Since Linux is free to distribute, many have over the years made lots of nux distributions specifically tailored towards particular use cases.

Tip: The Linux mint installer can boot into a fully fledged Linux without touching anything on your hard-drive, so if you want to check it out without installing, you can.

  • This consumer electronics store here in Norway offer what I refer to as dumbass-insurance. If you break your TV/phone/whatever, they give you a new one if it can't be repaired. And it covers literally everything, as long as you still have the damaged devices.

It's relatively expensive, but as a parent of four, this has covered the cost of quite a few things in our household.

It might take a while for them to replace it (they may not have the exact device in stock), but it's worth it for me.
