  • There is one good example of a good FOSS project with reliable funding and a thriving community, which is blender.

You know why blender is a success unlike other projects . Because it a very complicated piece of software that most of the community can't just fork or start another project. so for FOSS projects to thrive they need more convergence of developpers to the same project . rather than divergence of efforts into multiple of projects. I know that this is not how FOSS works. but the reality is that without an urge to devellop projects in rivalary with the commercial ones. the resulting quality will always be mediocre.

another problem is the lack of proper documentation, It it very hard and time consuming to get familiarised with complex project codes. many of them are lacking proper documentation to encouraged newer devs to join in. the reality is that this takes time away from coding into documentation, but its an important ressource to encourage growth and participtation.

  • These are valid concerns. But I doubt Big Tech is joyfully opening up their userbase to third parties to harvet more metadata. they would rather keep their walled gardens intact, add to that smaller players are insignificant compared the billion users these companies already serve. question mark is what other shenanigans are they going to inact once this legislation in enforced.

  • I don't know which google product they will make interoperate. what I know is that google is already working on implementing this. Teams will probably made to. in the early stages, I read that one criteria to be designated a gate keeper is to have more than 50 million users.

  • This is youtube being salty about people not wanting them to keep track of their watch list. because even without it youtube could make a lot of bucks by just suggesting based of other parameters. They are betting on nudging people the way they want.

  • I tried following lemmy communities using mastodon, but it wasn't pretty. everytime someone posts a comment I receive a separate post on tusky, without context (both the original post, or parent comment are missing) and I would need to click each time on a post to go back up the tree, mastoton and its clients need to do some work to improve interoperability with other platforms,

but unfortunaly the only platform Mastodon recognises and is excited about joining is threads. I have never seen them address the existance of other fediverse projects.

  • Is there any coordination with The other fediverse projects (mainly mastodon) and mastodon client developpers to enhance the interoperability with each other.

for instance being able to flawlessly post to lemmy and get notified about replies to your mastodon instance in a more convenient and user friendly way. where mastodon and its clients recognizes that a reply is comming from a lemmy server and displays it in a threaded way.

    • to stops showing every comment on posts made to community I follow as a separate post. it fills up the timeline. I know it's something to work on from the mastodon side. but maybe there are things lemmy can help improve.
  • So Japan is telling us, that intellectual property is holding back its progress in AI. so are they recognizing that IP is a hinderess to progress and innovation ? should we expect this to nullify other IP legislation ? is this heading to court?
