  • There's a ton of great women in metal, I'll drop two.

Mares of Thrace, Calgary AB based sludge/post/hardcore 2 piece, guitarist/vocalist is part of the original lineup, it's heavy and catchy.

I really like Hulder, black metal solo project, some of her early demos are amazing, this version of Into The Crypt of Rays comes to mind, got a wall flag of the art from this in my office.

  • It definitely depends the beer, La Fin du Monde (fitting name) used to have an entire section for aging that I found on the archive, 2-5 years at 12.5c, 9% so helps it that way. They're (Unibroue) owned by Sleeman who is owned by Sapporo, based in Québec, recall a lot of their beer being quite decent.

Edit: Site still has aging info but it's more of a general guide over beer specific

  • Have the non-curved version of that, prefer the curved display at that size but it's a nice display regardless, at the distance it sits not really an issue, just preference, definitely recommend.

Built in kvm is fantastic for using with my work machine, used to use 3x 1080p displays, just like this more for pretty much everything I do.

  • Powershell, windows terminal and winget are all legitimately nice tools, powershell especially is just stupidly more powerful than it needs to be (and verb-noun syntax is great).

  • Canada had the Residential School system, which was a genocide, don't take my word for it, it's one of the conclusions the Truth and Reconciliation report described as a cultural genocide, archive link. The last federal school closed in 1997, there's been mass graves found at some of these in the news over the last decade. Many of these schools were religious and as recently as 2017 the PM was seeking a formal apology from the pope (of the Christian denoms, Catholicism is the majority).

Canada's history is almost more sinister, we'd do well to never forget that if we want to address the systemic problems that remain to this day.

  • At least most nsbm sucks and/or have names like "ss wehrwulf division 1488" so it's usually really easy to avoid.

Still, be great to have another tool to filter bands.

Edit: looks like it's going to be based on musicbrainz metadata, checked Burzum because Vikernes is a Nazi and Peste Noir, neither of which have an nsbm tag, nor do Grand Belial's Key or an actual band called Wehrwolf, probably because of how niche black metal is.

I've personally used this list as a place to start, not perfect but it's something. Metallum lyrical content helps as well.

  • Dd is a solid option, I've used to image emmc modules, make CD isos, clone drives etc., but Clonezilla is a great tool to have around and quite literally purpose built for cloning and imaging disks, that's how I'd do it myself.

  • Sprouts do well with Braising, this is roughly how I do them, based on a whim that turned out fantastic.

    1. Halve and clean your sprouts, salt and pepper them
    2. Sear cut side down in oil of your choice. Bacon is the classic but absolutely not required if you want to do it vegan, maybe use some smoked paprika to get the smokey flavour, add aromatics like garlic near the end, it burns easy.
    3. Deglaze with balsamic vinegar, add enough liquid to just barely cover the bottom of the pan, cover and simmer until happy.

I know sprouts are far less bitter than they were when I was a kid, but I legit thought I disliked them. Borrowed a lot from braised cabbage recipes, just with a bit more aggressive browning. The sprouts hold up really well to longer cooking IMO (can't say the same to leeks, braised leeks are great, but not how I did them, turned into a textural nightmare), they're amazing hot or cold.

  • Found upgrades mildly annoying with GitLab, big reason I moved to Forgejo for my personal stuff. Far easier to setup and maintain for me, seems to be happy with caddy and runners are really easy to setup.

I'm not hosting for an entire org though, it's just me and I keep all my selfhost stuff local only, so obviously YMMV.
