  • It can’t be stopped this way but this is just some friction or increasing barrier to entry to discourage it. Most people are lazy and will just drop it as not worth the effort, and the most persistent will be annoying no matter what you do.

  • I think this might have survived reinstall but I never remember where you can reset it in the settings. Supposedly it’s somewhere there but I only hide read posts by accident and learned to live with occasional loss.

  • Did you by any chance enable auto hiding read posts?

  • Entertainment replacing entertainment is fine. Journalism being replaced by ads isn’t.

  • Yep, and Nintendo targets parents that want their kids to have childhood without guns and tits. It’s not like kids have no say in this either but parents will be more likely to go with Nintendo if they care.

  • This is a weird comparison. I don’t think we’ve ever had journalism focused on PC big box or DVD jewel cases, even though LGR is trying. There is definitely journalism around consumer media.

  • When it was still possible to support yourself from journalism you could see concessions being made and certain news being definitely sponsored but it was never as bad as it is now. If you subscribe over RSS you can see how much crap is being created - every new game release means my feeds are flooded with dozens of „Best places to farm underpants in Zenless Zone Zero” or „How to beat minor boss in episode 27”. Google broke the internet.

  • If you want to see where this goes check where mobile gaming journalism is currently. After Touch Arcade went tits up last year there’s basically nothing that isn’t 90% sponsored content or a SEO farm.

  • I always thought our ideological differences stemmed mostly from a set of axioms that we decide on based on our experiences (or prejudices for those who refuse to address reality). But going further and attributing prejudice to amygdala or rigidity in thinking to dopamine seems like a very straightforward explanation with lots of research already.

Pretty cool, thank you for sharing.

  • Trump knows, his buddies know. The amount of insider trading right now must be crazy.

  • He’s the number one in the Pokédex and in my heart.

  • I didn’t mean audio filters but you’re probably using Kega, right? Might want to check Genesis Plus GX core in Retroarch. See the docs here: https://docs.libretro.com/library/genesis_plus_gx/

By an off chance it’s also possible that something weird is happening to sampling rate, like your digital output only works at 48khz while Genesis outputs 44khz. Makes it sound horrible for sure. Happened to me on some occasions on Mac with a modern USB-C display recently (but like in general and not emulators).

    Mega Drive/Genesis FMgenesisplusgxym2612]

Select method used to emulate the FM synthesizer (main sound generator) of the Mega Drive/Genesis. 'MAME' options are fast, and run full speed on most systems. 'Nuked' options are cycle accurate, very high quality, and have substantial CPU requirements. The 'YM2612' chip is used by the original Model 1 Mega Drive/Genesis. The 'YM3438' is used in later Mega Drive/Genesis revisions.

    • MAME (YM2612) mame (ym2612)] - Selects MAME (YM2612) original Model 1 Mega Drive/Genesis] as FM synthesizer method which is fast and fullspeed.
    • MAME (ASIC YM3438) mame (asic ym3438)] - Selects MAME (ASIC YM3438) later Mega Drive/Genesis revisions] as FM synthesizer method which is fast and fullspeed.
    • MAME (Enhanced YM3438) mame (enhanced ym3438)] - Selects MAME (Enhanced YM3438) later Mega Drive/Genesis revisions] as FM synthesizer method which is fast and fullspeed.
    • Nuked (YM2612) nuked (ym2612)] - Selects Nuked (YM2612) original Model 1 Mega Drive/Genesis] as FM synthesizer method which is high quality but has high CPU requirements.
    • Nuked (YM3438) nuked (ym3438)] - Selects Nuked (YM3438) later Mega Drive/Genesis revisions] FM synthesizer method which is fast but has high CPU requirements.
  • Genesis/MD sound is definitely crunchy but there were multiple different audio chips of varying quality used in various Genesis/MD revisions. I usually play retro games on FPGA so I can only offer general advice but a modern emulator should allow you to mix and match those. You might want to experiment and see if you like some combination better. It won’t ever be like SNES though as it uses a very different approach to audio.

  • Going by game theory the most successful tactic in general is responding to escalation but not matching or exceeding it. It signals will to deescalate. China has other tools to put pressure on the US too (selling US debt).

  • Money market instruments are usually short term and backed by companies that rival smaller countries in size so it’s not given that they will get hit beyond what’s happening due to overall chaos. Junk bonds got hit first because they’re just risky, now treasuries join the gang but this part was intentional. Fixed income is still going to be safer than equities or derivatives overall.

  • Little spoken about in serious financial mags (maybe they’re scared what it means) but what Trump is doing is basically retreat from the USD being global reserve currency. Nobody stores USD because that doesn’t make money, the easiest way to do that is with Treasuries. They’re accessible, liquid, and backed by the issuer of the de facto global trading currency. They also allow US to borrow with no limit realistically.

Right now US is taking on massive amounts of debt and imports while exporting their currency to provide stability in the global trade. That role was filled by The British Empire before, it’s a known mechanism. For the neoliberal democracies that worked out fine but it didn’t work for the working class or the global south because the way US wielded this power was rather irresponsible if not malicious. Changing USD status in the global economy might be beneficial to the Americans in the long run but it has to be done in a more coordinated manner across multiple decades probably.

China sits on a ton of US Treasuries. Being the biggest foreign investor was their insurance against what US is doing. I have no idea how much this will explode but I have a suspicion Trump might be brought to submission by the sheer reality he has brought upon himself very soon - not from retaliatory tariffs but from general Treasury sell-off. Some say China will want to make CNY/RMB new global trading currency but that’s just a pipe dream. They have strong currency controls because their ultra rich would run the moment they could.
