  • It's new. Honda Space Development Division.

A lot of the global conglomerate Asian based companies do R&D across many fields, rather than just the product they're most know for. Toshiba makes nuclear reactors! Samsung has phones and sewing machines and microchips.... and nuclear reactors research.

  • In all these types of sci-fi, the underlying theme is that AI did some logics and found that humans are flawed and seeks to remedy the problems of humanity, all the war and greed and all the worst qualities of humanity itself that we evolved as and will always be, that repeats over and over in every generation or every hundred years. Machine logic works out a solution, despite humanity's overall progress in technology.

The Animatrix shows a really nice example of this where the machines won and then worked out a compromise where humans still exist. The machines learned all our cruelty and finally ended up finding a way to co-exist through the Matrix.

  • Kat and Kropp get in an argument over the war as they rest from an hour’s worth of drill (occasioned by Tjaden’s not saluting a major properly). Kat believes the war would be over if leaders gave all the participants “the same grub and the same pay,” as he says in a rhyme. Kropp believes the leaders of each country should fight each other in an arena to settle the war; the “wrong” people currently do the fighting.

  • That's an autorefractor machine and it's not exactly accurate (they over-correct a lot), nor is it legal or ethical to prescribe a medical ophthalmic device with it alone. You need subjective refraction done by an eye doctor so you can get the best lenses that you need. Also you could possibly need prisms for any tropia.

  • Reddit has been a an archive of some of the greatest collective minds of humanity. Besides the general algorithm up voting bots hogwash, there have been some really good subreddits with excellent information from learned professionals on topics. it I wish it was preserved rather than deleted. The AskHistorians is one of my favourite professional vetted and clean subreddits, lots of academic discussions there.

But all things have a Golden Era, and then it's enshittified and fades away. As Lemmy will be one day too.
