  • You could make the same claim for salt, saturated fats or even water if you wanted to. Everything is a poison.. it just depends on the dose.

Our bodies actually need a certain amount of sugar . It's why evolution built into us the craving for sweet things .. sugar is instant energy and in the distant past that often meant the difference between life and death.

I eat a lot of sugar, but I also run 70 miles a week and swim 5 so all that energy is not only consumed but required. If you like sugar maybe the answer is to increase your excercise rather than reduce your intake.

  • Guy Fawkes wasn't just killed though. He and his fellow conspirators suffered greatly before they died, and even after death their executioners inflicted torment on the corpses.

"They were to be "put to death halfway between heaven and earth as unworthy of both". Their genitals would be cut off and burnt before their eyes, and their bowels and hearts removed. They would then be decapitated, and the dismembered parts of their bodies displayed so that they might become "prey for the fowls of the air".

  • The PLO began their campaign of armed attacks in support of a Palestinian homeland in 1965, and over the ensuing 60 years they and their successors such as Hamas have achieved absolutely nothing. On the contrary, Israel is stronger than ever and continues to expand illegal settlements. And now no-one really cares .. including the Arab states like Egypt and Saudi Arabia who were once staunch supporters of the Palestinians. Maybe it's time for them to rethink their strategy, because this one doesn't seem to be working. I support an independent Palestine but I've given up hope of seeing it in my lifetime.

There is another option. A worldwide campaign to impose sanctions and isolate Israel could work. It worked brilliantly for the ANC in South Africa. But few countries are prepared to be seen supporting Palestinians while their militants murder Israelis.

  • In Argentina it must be Carlos Gardel - the most prominent exponent of Tango. You can walk around a corner in Buenos Aires on a Sunday to find a bunch of people dancing tango .. all dressed up to the nines (sorry!). It's amazing. Beautiful country and such an elegant city.

  • On the contrary, we need alternate opinions to sharpen our own arguments. Banning them leads to an echo chamber effect where nothing ever challenges our thinking.. which is a big part of the problems facing the world today.

  • When Israelis attack Palestinians they try to go after militants, not arbitrary civilians. That's not to condone their illegal occupation of Palestine which I strongly oppose and condemn. But I despair every time Palestinians kill Israeli civilians claiming they are striking a blow against the occupation.. they are not. On the contrary they harden the attitudes of Israelis and turn public opinion against them around the world. Their attacks have achieved absolutely nothing in over half a century. It's time to try a different approach.

  • "On 12 March 2022, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia carried out the mass execution of 81 men, including 7 Yemenis, 1 Syrian and 37 Saudi nationals on terrorism related charges and for holding deviant beliefs. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights understood that 41 were minority Shia Muslims who had participated in anti-government demonstrations calling for greater political participation in 2011–2012". -

But sure, let's all get offended about a fucking book.

  • A law that prevents someone from burning a book counts as a major restriction on free speech as far as I am concerned. It's a book for gods sake. The fact that burning it causes offense is immaterial.. simply causing offense to a group is not sufficient ground to place a restriction on an act that otherwise harms no one.
