No actually, in America we don't actually have all that many rights. I was specifically asking him what right we have as citizens that he feels we are being denied by this decision. Because I would be hard pressed to identify a right we have that is harmed by this decision

It appears this person signs off all of their comments with a creative commons license for fair use, presumably saying how you're allowed to use their comment. Which I'm relatively sure has exactly the same legal power as a boomer posting a Facebook picture saying that they don't consent to having their data collected

Stop Chinese data collection. I think this is just misdirection. You say it's conspiracy, but just like the PATRIOT Act had nothing to do with patriotism or protecting children and the Iraqi war had nothing to do with WMD... the government often misleads or outright lies.

Correct, it had nothing to do with patriotism or protecting children. It had to do with war profiteering. That's the simple answer to basically every question that starts with "why did the American government do..." It made wealthy Americans richer. That's the default US policy

Chinese influence on Americans. I think this one makes more sense than the first one. China is able to quietly suppress or encourage certain points of views - subtly pushing the 170 million Americans into directions that are beneficial for China's interests. For example, perhaps media discouraging support for Taiwan.

We are not. By basically every measurable metric of "freedom" the US doesn't even crack the top 10 in the world and on a lot of lists we don't make the top 20. I don't know what Americans think "freedom" means but whenever I hear people talk about it I often wonder if we live in the same country

You are right that we don't always live up to that term, and never really have. But we get a hell of a lot closer than China or Russia. We shouldn't be moving towards them in ideological terms, but away from them.

As for the young people, there are 170 million people on the app and it skews younger. A large portion of these people use Tiktok as their primary social media. A lot of these will be pushed towards anti-establishment and radical ideologies. Tiktok already leans leftist (and not neoliberal left).

That's just conjecture. Do you know how many social media sites we've seen come and go? You assert people will become anti-establishment, I assert they'll just move on to other social media. Both of our assertions are equally valid without evidence

America has none of those things. We have clear limits on what is and isn't acceptable speech. We routinely see protest groups beaten, jailed, and killed for protesting things the police like. Finally, you have to live in a bunker if you think we have a free market

Because part of the government's job is protecting its people. If China gave away a blowjob and cocaine robot and all you had to do was walk it around and give it detailed tours of civilian infrastructure that'd be banned too despite being hugely popular. If the government desides it's in the best interest of the people to not do something then they have the authority to prevent people to doing it

I think the data collection stuff is a red herring. Real reason is that war is coming and they're preparing the online information space so they can more easily manipulate it. Sort of how they did a test run with covid. Banning misinformation and such.

This is just pure conspiracy talk. Occam's razor says the simplest solution is usually correct. What's the simple answer here? Data is becoming one of the most valuable "natural" resources. You don't hand valuable resources for free to rival governments. You charge them, or you prevent them from taking it. It's all about money

Ok, why did she want to lock herself in a car on a hot day for 20 minutes? Why did she lock herself in a car at all? I don't really care how long it took, it's a dumb idea if it works like it says and it's dumber if it doesn't

I have a Tesla and this is largely her own fault. These updates by default are scheduled to run at night. I think midnight is default but I've moved mine to 3 am. Even when the update is downloaded it won't start it unless you press a button to do so, and that button is under a huge warning saying basically "your car will be totally useless for 20 minutes, please don't be inside of it" then when you start the update you have 2 minutes to just open the door, I don't even think you have to close it. There are also manual door handles inside the car. Tesla says that they might damage the locks, but that's still better than heatstroke. So she either manually started the update, ignored every warning and locked herself in her car, or she changed when her car updates automatically to the middle of the day which is likely when she uses it most

I understand that you should still be able to operate the doors even during software updates, and that it's a design flaw that all of these systems are so tightly intertwined that general updates make the car unusable, but it's not like the car doesn't give you a bunch of warnings

Also gizmodo argues that the car should require you to not be in it while it updates, however when we see the headline that someone got locked out of their Tesla during a blizzard and froze to death, then people will ask why they aren't allowed to be in the car. You own a 2 ton death machine, there should be a minimum amount responsiblity we expect you to have to operate it safely for yourself and everyone around you

Your problem is that you're trying to use logic here. They've clearly demonstrated that they don't care. They want a total ban and they'll use whatever weasle words, workarounds, and loopholes to make it so complicated that by the time you realize you're pregnant and don't want the pregnancy for any reason (including the guaranteed death of mother and fetus) that it's too late to change anything

I hate ads more than the average person (in real life not on lemmy) and even I acknowledge that you'll never escape them. Even when you totally ban them, they still will be present

I think we all know there's going to be a few bigger instances that people use for lemmy and those ones will eventually resort to ads to keep the lights on. Historically, that doesn't cause users to run away screaming and lemmy instances not federated with the most popular instances will face a tough uphill battle retaining users

Just the elimination of parent tax credits would create so much tax revenue that it'd cover those costs 10 fold and that's not even accounting for the new taxes. Plus fewer people would become parents as a result of this policy so it would help non-parents too. Contraceptives help everyone, not just those trying to avoid pregnancy

It's a little naive to assume there's zero advertising on lemmy. Plus at some point someone has to pay to keep the lights on here, especially if we're going to continue growing. Historically we have seen that users don't like to pay for content and that advertisers will pay to be on the platform

The problem with that distinction has always been advertisers. Letting users label content for adults is one thing, letting users specifically say their content involves disturbing content seems like a tacit approval of the behavior. Most advertisers have little interest in doing business with those platforms

Which is to say that lemmy might have an opportunity there because the platform is less ad centric!

Recently Spider-Man 2. I platinumed that game in 26 hours I think. The story is good, combat is fun, there's collectables and side missions but each is part of its own side story. They give you plenty of info to find almost all of the secrets too
