At current power costs in Germany (0.3€/kWh) that 10W becomes 26€ per year. If you are still on a contract from a few months ago (0.4€/kWh), you'll be paying ~35€ per year. Over a span of around 3 to 5 years of continued use, the cheap Aliexpress knockoffs definitely become reasonable at that price point. You'd still need a proper 230V to 12V PSU though, which costs <20€. I first tried one of the industrial ones with metal cage, but they have horrible efficiency especially at low loads. I would always suggest getting a consumer PSU with ErP rating and other certifications. Adding all the cost up, a good regular ATX PSU with 80PLUS certification might be competitive to such a combo too.
I am not too sure this problem is entirely about the PSU though. Maybe the mainboard is simply designed very cheaply and inefficiently. There's no way of testing a new PSU combo without trying it though.
I got a bag of the reusable stuff with indicator from Action a few years ago. In typical Action fashion the entire bag was already no longer dry of course. But that was easy to fix by just putting it in an old pan and heating it up until the indicators turned back. I did that in a well ventilated garage though, as I was not too confident in the product. Haven't had to renew it since then!
Yeah, I am regularly confused by it. I prefer having my maximized windows as normal windows in a virtual desktop. I can then minimize them and work with the windows below as usual. The MacOS approach is very different in that regard. I prefer managing virtual desktops myself, as it allows me to organize stuff and allows me to keep a simple overview of my virtual working layout in the back of my head. Dynamically changing the amount of virtual desktops/maximized windows is just too counterintuitive for my taste.
I'll have to look into using dynamic file configuration more heavily then. But how do you personally set up networking, if traefik doesn't handle it all for you? Can you just tell traefik the container name from docker-compose in the dynamic file config? Also, what is IaC? Cause it sounds great.
Podman is on my todo list! I like the ideas behind Podman and because I am already familiar with docker containers, I hope that I can transfer most of my stuff over almost pain free. But I heard the linuxserver.io images are unsupported on podman/rootless docker and might give me trouble. We'll see!
On the other hand, I have recently fallen in love with NixOS and would love to consolidate on a common Nix config for all my servers, Raspberries and maybe eventually desktops. It's the perfect time to try out podman!
I also run Traefik and it never stutters. But getting it set up at ALL was a chore. I tried four times and failed. Each time I spent several days full time on it. It's not that I skipped the docs, I actually am a RTFM kinda guy. But too much was implied in the docs and I never really felt like I knew why I was doing stuff. At least for me it was harder to set up than Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Gitea, Resilio and Vaultwarden COMBINED.
Some settings only work in a static config file, others in a "dynamic" config file and then there is container-specific labels too. It all needs to fit in with each other and error mesages were of course hidden away in docker logs. You can attach labels to containers with and without escaping them, and choosing wrong sends you down several rabbit holes at once. The config structure is probably intuitive to Go devs, but that really ain't me. Oh, there's also 3 different but equal formats for conf files too.
I read countless guides and it finally worked on attempt 5. All just because I liked the autoconf for all containers. I could have been done with reverse proxies within a day had I just chosen a different one.
Now I am even debating wether I should keep it at all, because I'd rather not mount the docker sock into my reverse proxy, the one software that ultimately connects to the web directly.
Yeah, it's always very two sided with the EU. On the one hand it brings forward a lot of progressive and positive change, on the other hand it's used to "quietly" walk around the local political climate. Political actors push unpopular things on the EU level, but as soon as people catch wind of it, they market themselves as always having disagreed with them. They often keep pushing for it anyway, because people really don't notice things on the EU level. Everybody only ever pays attention to the national sphere of politics.
In German politics it's often the case that high-ranking national politicians that "fail" in the public eye are pushed higher up into the EU level. Take Ursula von der Leyen for example. Too many scandals in Germany, immediately pushed out of the way and now holds an important position in the EU.
Nah, lemmy is too small of a circlejerk to really be a target for these people. I don't think instances require working phone numbers for account creation anyway.
You might be better of using a wrapper for GTK or QT, which are very mature but not Rust based. If you want some fun with guis, try egui. I REALLY like it and it's a great experience working with it, but not deferred mode.
Some I recognize are IDEs like PyCharm
