  • The whole story is wild, and terrible.

He rang the doorbell shortly before 10 p.m. and waited for someone to respond, Merritt said.

“Whoever was inside took a little longer than he anticipated to respond, and so he just waited at the door,” Merritt said, citing a statement Yarl gave to law enforcement investigators from his hospital bed Friday.

“He heard rustling around going on in the house and then finally the door was open,” the attorney said. “And he was confronted by a man who told him, ‘Don’t come back around here,’ and then he immediately fired his weapon.”

Yarl was shot in the head, which cracked his skull and left him with a critical, traumatic brain injury, the attorney said. While the teenager was still on the ground, the homeowner opened fire a second time, striking Yarl in the upper right arm, Merritt said.

    And then

Merritt said the teenager saved his own life by fleeing and banging on at least three neighbors’ doors for help.

At the third home, Merritt said, the neighbor told Yarl to lie on the ground and put his hands in the air. He complied and then passed out, the attorney said.

  • Idk how a 10 minute drive is a half hour walk. Average walking speed is 3 mph, so a half hour is 1.5 miles. If you’re driving that in 10 minutes, you’re only averaging 9 mph.

I don’t mean to pile on here because I understand your frustration. I grew up in NYC where basically no one drives, and didn’t get a driver’s license until my 30s when I moved to California for work. Even then I put off getting a car for years, since I like walking and don’t mind “decent” public transit.

But it just became impossible to continue. My commute was an hour and 45 minutes (one way), with about 40 minutes of walking, a train and a bus. I like walking but when it was over 100 degrees in the summer, or raining, or a wildfire smoke day it was miserable. The buses run every 30 minutes so if there’s a missed connection the commute becomes over 2 hours (still just one way). And the train has only 1 line so when there’s a mechanical issue you’re out of luck and just have to call an Uber anyway.

I finally broke down and got a car. My commute is now 30 minutes each way. The gas for my commute is somehow cheaper than the public transit. It’s ridiculous and it shouldn’t be this way, but it is.

  • They’ve been doing studies of what would be required for ignition for a while, but have never demonstrated ignition using the Z machine.

If they did have ignition, there’s no way they would’ve let LLNL claim to be first and enjoy all the media attention.

  • The latest Map Men video is a bit light on the maps (there’s basically only one) but is still a fascinating look at how top level domains came to exist and not match the physical world.

Their previous video, Internet Vs Ocean: the essential wires we never think about, is a good companion piece that describes the network of undersea cables that carry the internet across oceans.

  • Interestingly, the journal editors have released an expression of concern earlier this year for this article and others by the same author.

SAGE Publishing has been made aware of scientific concerns regarding the work of Dr. Nicholas Guéguen. Multiple concerns have been raised regarding the integrity of the research including but not limited to concerns around data fidelity, replicability of findings, and ethical consent and oversight for studies involving human participants. SAGE Publishing’s Research Integrity Team, in cooperation with this journal's editors, are currently conducting an investigation into these articles.

This expression of concern will remain in place until the investigation is completed and any further needs for appropriate action have been taken.

  • The vote was 336 to 95, clearing the two-thirds threshold required for passage. In the end, 209 Democrats and 127 Republicans joined to pass the bill. Ninety-three Republicans opposed it, as did two Democrats.

While this is technically bipartisan, a majority of the votes are from Democrats. Once again it’s up to congressional Democrats to save the GOP from itself (not to mention America from the GOP) and keep the government functioning.

  • Exactly! Heck, right before he was ousted McCarthy went on TV and blamed Democrats for not passing a budget, despite the fact that 1) McCarthy’s continuing resolution passed primarily with Democrat votes, and 2) Republicans were the ones unable to agree as a party on a budget.

It’s super important to constantly hammer home that all of this dysfunction isn’t “congress”, it’s congressional republicans.

  • If they need to raise prices by 18% to pay their workers, then they need to actually raise the prices on the menu. Right now this is just bait and switch, it’s dishonest and possibly illegal depending on the location.

  • I disagree, “The Congressional Chaos Shutdown" would pin it on congress as a whole.

There’s a semi-paradoxical fact that most people strongly dislike congress, but have higher opinions of their congressman. They always blame dysfunction on “other people in congress”. I guarantee if you polled republican voters and asked who was in control of congress, a substantial portion would say democrats.
