  • As the article notes this actually does surprise a large number of people. Researchers did a study with thousands of Americans where they found that people generally understood supply and demand for goods like cars or produce.

Then the economists asked the participants about housing. They said: If a new law makes it easier to build dwellings near train stops, what happens to housing prices? Well, all of a sudden, the laws of supply and demand no longer applied. More than a third of participants said that “a large, exogenous increase in their region’s housing stock” would cause rents and home prices to rise.

  • It's amazing that he can still surprise me with what a piece of shit he is.

I agree, it’s like a super power in a way.

For me at least, what makes it continue to be surprising is that he says these things and still retains his supporters. And when I hear he said something newly shocking, I know without having to ask that those supporters will still be there. So it’s not just that one person could be such a piece of shit, but that so many could agree with one.

  • Former president Donald Trump ratcheted up his dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants Saturday by saying that some who are accused of crimes are “not people.”

“I don’t know if you call them people,” he said at a rally near Dayton, Ohio. “In some cases they’re not people, in my opinion. But I’m not allowed to say that because the radical left says that’s a terrible thing to say.”

Apparently I’m part of the radical left, because yes that is a terrible thing to say.

  • I’m guessing they signed up for HP Instant Ink, a monthly subscription service that monitors the ink levels in the printer and automatically mails you refills.

If you buy an HP printer, they HEAVILY promote this and offer discounts/free trials. I declined, because fuck that, but I could see someone agreeing and forgetting about it.

As always, turn on closed captions for the complete experience. This video in particular had a lot of info in the captions.

  • It’s wild that Republicans simultaneously believe that:

    1. teachers cannot be trusted to teach about race, gender, and certain parts of history (aka mentioning these things at all) and need to have all books in their classrooms reviewed by an external party for inappropriate content, and
    2. teachers can totally be trusted with guns in the classroom.
  • There’s an entire book dedicated to answering your question: The World Without Us.

The Wikipedia article I linked summarizes a lot of the book, but I recommend reading it since the details are fascinating.

    TL;DR:

The longest-lasting evidence on Earth of a human presence would be radioactive materials, ceramics, bronze statues, and Mount Rushmore. In space, the Pioneer plaques, the Voyager Golden Record, and radio waves would outlast the Earth itself.

  • One definition: food “belonging to the category that is salty or spicy rather than sweet.”

It’s a bit of an odd definition but it gets the gist across. An example of using savory: differentiating between pies with savory filling (meats, vegetables, etc) and sweet filling (fruits, custard).

  • From the same person in the article:

“Trump has a business background and he’s a great negotiator. He has a strong personality. These conflicts can be resolved through negotiation, and Trump is the right man at the right time.”

They still think of him as the character he played on The Apprentice.
