  • For more on the above phenomenon, watch the movie Midnight In Paris.

When I was a kid I loved listening to Jimi Hendrix. a lot. I listened to everything I could. For a while I wondered what it must have been like to see Jimi play Monterey. Then I discovered Prince. It turns out I loved Prince even more than I ever loved Jimi Hendrix. It also turns out comparing the two isn't really fair.

  • SAS is utter insanity. I took grad-level Stats and we learned how to use it. I almost started to get good at it. When I brought my very first analysis to my grad advisor she told me that all analysis has to be performed by the department's head statistician. All I could think was: "why the fuck are they forcing me to learn a language they won't allow me to use???"

  • Is this where we mention "Insights", the coloured blocks that show your co-workers your work personality traits? As part of their analysis you get to do an overly-long personality quiz. Later, when you go to their seminar, you get a book full of descriptions about you that sound like the "cold reading" stuff that fortune tellers use. That stuff is BIG-time Forer effect.

  • I've been doing more stuff offline these days. I've been making music that about 10% of people actually like, which is a pretty decent ratio, I think ( https://songwhip.com/thethreeleonards ). between music and board-gaming and TV the hours fill up.

I've been on The Internet since 1995. I, too, used to enjoy this. There is enjoyment to be found, but most of that is in finding people I can sincerely connect with, which is difficult. Treating The Internet like it's the Mirror Of Erised is not the way to happiness.
