I think you're misunderstanding the situation. In the Great U.S. of A.™®©, car manufacturers are forbidden to sell directly to customers, and instead are required to go through independently-owned dealerships that act as middlemen between the manufacturer and the customer. This allows dealerships to arbitrarily control how the cars are sold, add unremovable "dealer options", and that thing everybody loves: markups! The manufacturers have no control over this.

What Tesla managed to do (in some states, at least) is introduce a direct sale model that allows them to sell their cars directly to the customer with no middleman. However, because of archaic laws that really should be repealed at this point, the car can't be delivered to you at the store - it has to be shipped to you.

Recommended or not, sometimes it's just really handy to have available. I use Google Sheets for various things (for now), including my monthly budget, and chore/TV/etc schedules for the kids. It's far easier to just pop in on my phone really quick to look at or edit something when needed, instead of pulling out my laptop that may or may not be dead and waiting for that to boot, or going upstairs to my bedroom to sit at my PC, at which point I would have already forgotten what I was supposed to be doing (fuckin ADHD).
