  • Yes, being away from the judgment/advice/outrage communities has really improved my headspace.

I was fooling myself that giving advice was me helping people, and maybe sometimes it was. But it was also me getting way too emotionally invested in things that were quite likely creative writing, as well as just this relentless stream of the worst side of human nature.

  • !conservative@kbin.social is like this too. I actually thought it was empty/abandoned so I started posting there about conserving wildlife.

Turns out it had one person posting there already, only they are blocked so I can't see them. Anyway that person was disgruntled and held a poll, but the poll result was most people there want it to be about the environment.

  • One of my loved ones is in hospital (in another town) so I'm really hoping they are okay.

I still feel really shy about posting here, but I'm trying to be more myself on the internet lately. Or in general.

  • child labor, slave wages

Or in this case, actual child slavery - a lot of these children have been kidnapped (sometimes from neighbouring countries), trafficked to a plantation, and made to work for free.

I think people like to imagine that these are all kids working alongside mum and dad for subsistence wages for their families but the reality is often much, much bleaker than that.

  • Big publishers, sure.

But my publisher is an ordinary human being. I have been to their house and met their family. They are not rich, in fact they are struggling.

I have also released some work under Creative Commons, so for that stuff, I am my publisher.

But, there are AIs out there that I don't want to be trained on my work. The abomination that Palintir are building to wage war on people springs to mind. I don't want anything to do with that.

In many jurisdictions we are allowed to assert moral rights over our work. This is the right for it to not be mutilated or perverted or attributed to someone else. In my view, moral rights should extend to assimilation by AI models.

I can't stop individual people who I think are bad people from reading it, sure, but surely I should get a say in whether massive corporations who I think are evil can use it for their own enrichment.

  • Oh, yeah I know you wouldn't. You're in kind of a tricky situation but I think that spat over covid sort of tested boundaries for you.

I'm in Aotearoa, obviously we have a similar problem. Culturally we would go where you go, but on the other hand we didn't follow the US into Iraq. China are by far our biggest trading partner, and also those of us with a long memory were disillusioned by how our allies treated us over the Rainbow Warrior terrorist attack so there's probably not the same level of confidence.
