Now he is pushing for tariffs against Russia. And he finally seems to be figuring out that Putin doesn't want to stop trying to conquer Ukraine...a point the rest of the world understood immediately...years ago.

For me, it's a huge headache saver. We have a 60 lb dog who likes to get into bed with us, along with one of our cats. If I don't make my side of the bed prior to my wife and the dog getting in, I'm probably not going to have usable sheets and blankets for the night. Wherever the sheets are when he decides to hop in, that's where they're staying.

So, I definitely make at least my side of the bed every day, at some point. Not usually right away in the morning, but it definitely gets done. I don't go all out on it, just get the sheet and blanket (and comforter, in winter) in essentially the right position for me. It's critical for a good night of sleep.

And, yes, we probably shouldn't have let him in the bed in the first place. Lesson learned. That's a whole other story. But the damage is done.

Was the TV just resting on that ledge?

With a good router, it's not that hard to do. But even then it took me a long time to get around to setting up the separate network, and I don't think I've migrated all of my devices over to it still (some got moved, new ones go there, but there are some older devices still sitting on the original network). So, yeah, there's definitely extra effort, and it's not really fun like getting that new smart device integrated. I will say the stuff on that network works perfectly - I haven't noticed any side effects.

Oh I did allow them access to the pool ntp server so they can pick up the correct time, and some require temporary access to the internet while setting up (the linknlink RF device needed it to download the Home assistant version of their firmware, for example).

I know. Stop worrying about your computer and install Debian! It just works. It updates without a problem.

When I install a new application, I generally run it immediately. Having the new indicator might be nice to help find it - they don't always drop into the menu where I expect.

I agree, I can't see why it upsets the author so much. "You've installed a new app, here it is." "YYYEEEAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!"

The other night, a cat was laying on our front porch while I was walking the dog. I took a bowl of water out for him but he took off before I got anywhere near him. He lives with a colony at a horse farm near us, so he's fine, probably, but I wanted to be certain.

I "grew up" with Slackware, so I definitely understand the dependency issue.

I like flatpaks (and similar) for certain "atomic" pieces of software, like makemkv. For more "basic" software, like, say, KDE, I want it installed natively.

One of ours sometimes does that. He often sleeps on my feet at night, and usually I can move some without getting attacked, but sometimes he does claw me.

Yeah, my wife is Catholic; we had two options for wedding. The 1 hour ceremony, or the 40 minute ceremony (I think the difference is serving communion). That was it. I don't think we could have gotten a 3 hour ceremony even if we'd wanted it; they need the church for other things.

She actually survived several years after that incident, but she was never quite the healthy cat she was before we moved. Unfortunately she ended up in the animal hospital again at the height of the pandemic, and it was so bad that they were letting us into the building to see her. She was there over a week, and she just wasn't getting better - and even if she had recovered, it wasn't a cure; it was just recovery. In other words, there was no guarantee she wouldn't be back there again in a few months with exactly the same problems.

One of our cats had a serious medical issue, we think a blood disease caused by a tick bite (we had just moved to a new house, and we think it was already in the house - she was an indoor only cat). One night as she was recovering, she started attacking her own tail. This is something that can happen to cats who go through a trauma like this. We tried to distract her from it, but it didn't work.

The next morning, we discover blood all over the house. She got her tail bleeding and then proceeded to walk around the house. Our bedroom, my office, the hallway, the stairwell, and every room on the first floor.

I worked on cleanup while my wife took her to the animal hospital.

They tried to bandage it, but it never worked, it would start bleeding again when the bandage was removed. We had to have her tail docked.

Poor kitty. She passed away in 2020 (she never really got well after that initial incident, unfortunately). I still miss her!

Yep. I'm retired now, but before retirement a month or so ago, I was working on a project that relied on several hundred people back in 2020. "Why can't AI do it?"

The people I worked with are continuing the research and putting it up against the human coders, but...there was definitely an element of "AI can do that, we won't need people" next time. I sincerely hope management listens to reason. Our decisions would lead to potentially firing people, so I think we were able to push back on the "AI can make all of these decisions"...for now.

The AI people were all in, they were ready to build an interface that told the human what the AI would recommend for each item. Errrm, no, that's not how an independent test works. We had to reel them back in.

Anyone remember Ross Perot? He created the Tea Party, which eventually took over the Republican party.

This isn't really what you asked, but I feel the need to share my experience using an alternate layout.

I used to use the Dvorak layout - for several years, in fact, and I was pretty good with it. I switched back to Qwerty, because Dvorak just caused too many issues, especially at work, and any speed gains were lost in dealing with switching the layout for tech support and things like that. Sometimes they'd remote in and type, and it would translate their keypresses incorrectly.

Now I doubt they'd even let me switch the keyboard layout (a function they don't expect people to need, so they lock it out to reduce the chance of someone accidentally triggering it).

Qwerty does the job, I guess.
