  • Do you not feel the same is true with Reddit?

    • Downvoted perfectly good and reasonable comments. Some are the correct answers because you know a lot about a particular thing in the world.
    • Downvoted perfectly good and reasonable submissions
    • Reddit mods shadow banning your submissions/comments
    • Reddit mods deleting your submissions/comments and/or locking them.
    • People in general just being asses.

I'm not saying that Lemmy is perfect but it feels like both can have a similar vibe. A lot of Lemmy people were/still are Reddit people and so it makes sense that both have similar vibes.

  • I didn't enable anything. One would assume the default settings should offer a good level of protection to the users.

Interestingly I haven't had a single spammer/scammer annoy me on Signal. I'm not sure if there are any of these settings in Signal?

  • I cannot see how distributed systems like Fediverse can be GDPR compliment unless you lock out the system admins of the instance they host. Good DevOps requires frequent backups; it also requires offline backups.

It is one of the only good things about a centralised system - the entity that holds the data can be held accountable for not being compliant and other such things. Many mere mortals can collectively group together to fight against the goliath.

It requires too many resources to chase after the small instance owners of a distributed system like Fediverse. Just like how 3 letter agencies chase after the people who like to ride the seas in their wooden boats. The 3 letter agencies have spent a lot of resources attempting to shut it down but they've never come close.

  • I actively don't use the YouTube app.

No adblocker, sponsorblock, or return the dislike button.

I also don't use the app for a website if the mobile website is good enough. Less software on my phone, so a reduced amount of storage used on apps, fewer updates, hopefully reduced CPU and battery consumption, fewer security issues, reduced data collection, and my phone is just a little cleaner to use. Everyone has their own preference, this is just mine :)

  • How many times have you been in crash? And if not at all or rarely then why do you believe you'll be in a crash the next time you rent a vehicle?

The way I think about it, if you rent a vehicle frequently or for long enough, you're saving money after about 10-20 days of rentals. The exact number of days depends on the cost of the insurance waiver and excess fee for the rental company you use. So if you use a rental for longer than this number of days, then even if you write off the vehicle and pay the full excess, you will still have more money in your pocket than if you paid the waiver every time.

The key to success is having a keen eye when checking out the car and getting them to put down every mark - even if you have to be a little pushy to get them to do it. Obviously, don't be a wreck less driver. And you should be golden.

  • It's now been a while since I used Spotify, so no idea what it's like now. I started to get Spotify inserted adverts when listening to podcasts. After a month or so of getting adverts I stopped my subscription and moved to other sources of audio entertainment.

I paid for Spotify primarily to get away from adverts, secondly it was more convenient than being on the wavey seas with my parrot, black flag, and wooden leg.

  • The insurance waiver is a gold mine for them. A good friend of mine works for a national car rental company in my country. He was telling me that they attempt to hard sell the waiver because they make a lot of profit on it.

My thoughts on it are, I'm a careful driver, I haven't had an accident yet. The waiver can be just as expensive as the car depending on what you rent and the period of the rental. I'm happy to 'take the risk' because in the long run I'll be less out of pocket even if I do have to pay the excess once in a while.

  • The very first time I rented a vehicle, I got done for a scratch that I didn't make. It was a scratch from underneath the front bumper. When I got the car they never checked that area but it was the first place they looked when I returned it.

Since this incident, I go over the car with them with a very keen eye. I get them to mark down every little mark. Including underneath the bumpers. I even get them to write it down if the car was wet since that can mask scratches.

  • I don't understand the love for Telegram.

In the short period of using it I had so much BS come through by scammers/spammers - both as DMs and group messages. I've rarely had that with WhatsApp.

In my eyes WhatsApp is far better than Telegram. And Signal is far greater than WhatsApp. The only thing I wish Signal had was inbuilt GIFs; it's not that much of an issue on mobile but it's a pain on desktop.
