  • I still use email clients. Not sure if that's now considered the old school way of doing things? So the UI doesn't come into it at all.

I'm not sure how much impact the IP address/server of the mail server has on reputation. I know the domain name and its DNS records have somewhat of an impact.

  • Interestingly I've had quite a few negative bombed comments on Lemmy that were nothing burgers saying really plain stuff.

Weirdly I've had the complete opposite experience on the other platform. Comments that were also nothing burgers saying really plain stuff too.

  • We use cPanel emails at work... don't ask, please 😭😂. Since we've got off a couple of large website hosting platforms it appears to be smooth sailing.

We're currently hosting our emails with a small web hosting provider, 'only 250k' websites are hosted with them. They apparently use SSDs for customer data and boy oh boy is that apparent. Emails are sync'd, sent, and received faster than any other cPanel emails we've been on. We've only been with them for about 1-1.5 years, so something might come up one day.

I know it's not quite self hosting, but it's quite close to it.

  • What is NSFL?

I've never seen or heard of it before.

NSFW is not a Reddit thing. It was around and already popular years before Reddit came along.

I agree that NSFW should be more granular but let's keep the acronym because everyone already knows what it means and I see no reason to move away from it.

  • Unless they purchase exclusivity rights then you won't be able to subscribe to it.

Unfortunately I live in a country where F1 TV Pro cannot be purchased because of exclusivity deals and so I have to navigate the wavey seas to access it. They've been tightening up people's abilities to stream the content non-legitimately these past few years. It's been becoming more and more difficult; this year, if I wasn't technically minded then I would have to fall back on to ace streams or those websites that share the stream with a shocking amount of adverts and other 'fun' things. I foresee that in the near future it'll be even stricter and I'll completely lose access to F1 TV Pro. :(

The annoying thing is that I'd quite happily be a paying customer... if only they would allow me to be one.

There is a webpage on F1's website that shows which countries have access to what, when, and how long for.

  • I don't ever see cars disappearing until we figure out some sci-fi level of transportation. ICE is clearly going to fade out of existence in the next 20-30 years, but there'll still be cars on the road - just hydrogen/battery powered.

  • I just ignore people who annoy me for the same reason. Either of us could be having a bad day or misunderstanding what the other is trying to communicate. It doesn't mean they might not say something I want to read in the future - especially with smaller communities.

I used to really like the RES extension so I could tag people just in case I come across them again in the future. Both positive and negative experiences with people.

I've only blocked a handful of people like shallowboob (or whatever their name was) who karma farmed/karma bot and I just wasn't interested anymore.

  • Hexagon is the bestagon. Hahaha...I like your hive response.

I'm using the Sync app for Lemmy. It looks like comments are ordered by points/voting and there doesn't appear to be a way to sort by activity. Hot/new/top/old are the options.

I don't deny that there will always be an element of echo chamber but I'd prefer it to be as balanced as possible.

Maybe because I'm using an app instead of visiting an instance website and have my default view set to subscribed communities that I'm not seeing an instance echo chamber. Lemmy just appears to be more programming/Linux/self host/home lab than anything else at the moment.

  • If someone states a valid argument that you disagree with, you believe it should be sent to the bottom of the comments? Sounds like the reinforcement of a hive mind, and therefore Lemmy will become just another echo chamber.

Should there be another mechanism to show both? Probably.

  • I wish votes were like how Reddit originally intended their voting system to be and still states it to be. Upvote if it's relevant and adds to the conversation, otherwise downvote. But people use it as an agree/disagree system.
