  • Plexamp was launched twice, first as a Plex Labs desktop-only app, then completely overhauled as a cross-platform app with 'droid and iOS releases.

It has changed a lot since, the UX is much smoother now, with tons of new settings + features implemented. There's no other selfhosted solution that comes close IMO

  • Osmand works great for me, at least for bike navigation. Not driving yet so can't comment on how good that aspect is. Google maps has a few paths & routes in my area (village) either unmapped or incorrectly mapped, and i'm not too fond of Google anyway.

Personally I was after offline maps for my device to begin with, so for my use case Osmand is absolutely amazing

  • I'm pretty sure I still have a decade old liveusb somewhere with a casper-rw Zorin install, all decked out with compiz desktop switcher animations and Tuxkart 🤣

I'd boot up that thing on school computers and mess around with Linux for fun back in the day

  • Impressive work by the students IMO, a 1200kg EV campervan that achieves a realistic range extension with its solar power roof. Great to see that this is even possible with current solar tech though - I wonder what something like this would look like in the future with more efficient panels.

Let's say this matures, what would be the stand out differences between something like this, and a normal combustion vehicle? The main advantages the combustion has would be really good fuel density (longer range) and no waiting on the batteries to recharge, however the solar vehicle is much more lightweight (harder to get stuck, as mentioned in the article) and requires almost no maintenance... maybe just dusting off the panels after driving through a sandy region

  • I believe the base EMMC model is sold at a loss, the other ones make some money for Valve if i'm not mistaken...

At least this isn't that $100 internet subscription computer from the 2000s, that people purchased just to erase the subscription-based OS and slap a fresh copy of Win95/98 on it 🤣 poor Netpliance

  • Crunchyroll used to (very blatantly) but I don't think they do that anymore.

No idea of any other on-demand streamers using it unfortunately, however WWE, warner bros, FIFA, formula 1 and a bunch of sports organisations with their own subscription service use this tech in a transparent way to kill IPTV streams quickly
