  • Other apps by the same developer (futo) seem to contain no trackers

FUTO is an organisation that wholly sponsors developers to make source-available, privacy respecting apps. They do other stuff too, but mainly this.

Like Shark Tank or Dragons Den, but for developers

  • A lot of the people complaining about the license don't get this. Also doubly surprised at those saying they won't use it because the license doesn't allow them to redistribute the app with malware, or charge money for it 🤦‍♂️

I'm also completely baffled at the amount of people here who have never heard of Louis Rossmann... literally the dude behind Right to Repair

  • Ohh I see, sounds like more of a principled reason then if i'm understanding you correctly

Edit: while Louis is accepting feedback on the license specifically, I doubt the project will move to something relicensable, since Louis specifically picked this license to prevent what is happening to NewPipe and the spread of malware using his name to gain trust. He's also been burned a lot during the R2R stuff with unforseen loopholes abused by rival lobbyists, so the FUTO license is probably looking at things from a protectionist perspective, not as an individual from the FOSS community.

I've only heard of one OSS project relicensing in recent times, and they had to reach out to each individual contributor for written permission, hopefully this rings a bell for someone here because I can't remember the project name...

  • As far as I can tell, their temporary nonfree license only really affects people interested in making money from redistribution, and potential bad actors.

Privacy enthusiasts and individuals who want to mod it for their own personal use are pretty much unaffected AFAICT. Although I prefer FOSS software, this license honestly has no downside I can see for individuals like ourselves, unless I'm missing something

  • What's wrong with the FUTO license?

AFAICT, the only restrictions are you cannot make money off it, and you can't pretend to be the official app. Very similar to the Mozilla license, although Mozilla's has some extra bits to be compliant with releasing on the App Store, which has its own licensing requirements that is not met by any version of the GPL

  • Post titles can be edited after posting, at least on Lemmy

Integrating something like Matrix is not an easy feat, there is a lot of heavy lifting being done in the background to make things easier for us users, like key generation, message signing, verifying logins etc. that another dev may not have the time or resources to implement. Lemmy partially solves this with a dedicated message button if you have a Matrix account linked

  • Apologies for the silly question - by presented, do you mean this text post here on Lemmy, or the YT video?

If you mean this lemmy post, this is how everyday people share content IMO, it isn't detailed but all the info we need is behind the YT link. OP could also just be excited about the app and thought others already knew about it, like I did but hadn't realised it's out now.

  • I hope they go down the crapper completely TBH, with their predatory practices targeted towards young people who don't know what they're being pulled into.

That and the various gamedev companies on that site exploiting child devs who truly deserve better than that
