  • Just on a tangent here - I agree with everything you said except for the gas price part. Gas prices are at a 3 year low, and when you adjust for inflation we are not that far off from an all time historical low price of gas.

There are cars out there that get insanely good mpg now. 100-200 empg for EVs and even 57 mpg on a Prius. The fact that 90% of the cars on the road in the US are SUVs or trucks just shows how selfish people are. The average US driver drives 37 miles a day, at $3 a gallon & 57mpg that comes to a monthly gas expense of $58. A pretty minor expense when you compare it to rising costs at the grocery store.

  • to make that statement right now with current world affairs is pretty shortsighted.

Reddit was heavily taken over by Russian bots the past few years, so any impropriety in regards to the Ukraine war is taken as that person likely being a Russian bot or propagandist. Hence the ban, which was arguably not that unjustified.

  • Ubuntu shouldn't be with those who care about privacy. Snap is completely integrated into Ubuntu now.

They're going to be just as bad as Apple, Google or Microsoft if they're given the market share. Corporations care only about one thing.

  • honestly Libreoffice is not on par with MS Office. I use MS at work and Linux at home and Libreoffice is great for general use, but it is very rough around the edges, and does not have all the capability that MS does. I wish it were not the case but lack of an excellent office suite is one weaknesses of Linux.

  • ah. But at the same time it would be good if Lemmy was not as centralized on a single server. Lemmy.world is most of Lemmy at the moment, and when it goes down almost every other server is a snapshot frozen in time.

I think it would be good if there were better tools to find closer servers (like geographically <1000km ) and to spread the fediverse out a bit.

  • how do you find out where they are geographically located? I see they're in the US from the fediverse.observer list but it doesn't explain what state they're in. The server could still be 3000 miles away depending on what state it is.

  • long term I'd like to, but it requires some investment in dedicated hardware, and I'm guessing getting a domain is not free typically either. How much does it cost to setup and operate a basic server month to month?

  • Airlines overbook almost every flight. That means if you're not in that line, you have a good chance of getting booted off the flight. It has happened to me a couple times.

They normally give you a voucher to compensate you for the trouble that can be used on a future flight. They will typically try to rebook you (at no cost) the same day if they can arrange it.
