  • Well I personally think the FTC should do more, but until money out of politics, it will never happen. And pending some mass upheaval; that is probably in all reality unlikely as long as people are fed, money will almost certainly never be out of politics.

So all the more necessity to encourage people to just abandon these profiteering companies.

  • I think everyone took there comment in the wrong light. They're not defending Google, but rather pointing out that this behavior should be expected from a for profit company, and thus people should have avoided the situation in the first place. Not that it should be that way, but we live under capitalism unfortunately, and people need to be way more skeptical of these companies.

Rather than blaming inaction of the FTC, why not just stop using play store all together and encourage people to use Fdroid instead? Companies will never stop abusing 'e-goods' , it's just not going to happen. People should just get beyond ownership and embrace the advantages of free software.

  • I just looked up the definition of excel power user, and it's mostly stuff I deal with on a daily basis, so I guess I'm a power user.

That being said I am switching to libreoffice currently because I'm tired of proprietary bullshit. I also like the idea of being able to change libre for my needs if I want. I haven't seen any degradation other than a rough around the edges UI. What is libre lacking that MS has?

  • We use windows at my work (I've been using Linux for 2 decades on home computer). I'm trying to migrate our work CPUs to Linux but the biggest road block is my unfamiliarity with librecad, I'm used to autocad. I use cad command line a lot and it's hard to live without auto suggest commands. Libre has the capability but it's very rough and not mature.

  • Free beer, like you get a free beer at a party or event, it's no cost. Free software that costs nothing but is closed source.

Free as in freedom means the user has full access to the source code and is not subject to unknown code like in proprietary software.

Freedom as RMS sees it: https://lemmy.world/post/8134208

  • I've been using SearXNG over Duckduckgo lately. It's a free (as in freedom) aggregator that searches all the engines. It's not perfect but you know 100% you are not being tracked.

The results are closer to a true old school search of the web. Sometimes it works better, sometimes not as well. It's best to pick a local instance that has quicker speeds since the main site can be a bit slower than local ones.

This distributed web stuff is really taking off. I like it!

  • even withstanding, the other issues are still present. I'm not saying cities are hellscapes, but they are lacking a few advantages that rural areas have. I like touching my own plot of dirt on this pale blue dot. My own piece of Earth. There is nothing like the nutrient overload from the first of the seasons garden fresh backyard tomato grown from last years compost. Or building random projects; or just lying on the ground looking at the stars anytime I want. In my book no amount of money would be worth sacrificing all that to live in a dense city for me personally. But this is just my outlook, I understand many other people value things differently.
