  • I've made a comment about NASs a while ago explaining mostly the important parts of it (https://lemmy.ca/comment/1524030), but to answer your questions :

Can you create a NAS with any modem or is the fritzbox particularly good for this job?

I would not recommend using a router/modem as your nas server because there are better ways to do this. Simplest way would be to get a small computer (like a raspberry pi, thinkcenter, etc) and attack external harddrives. Then, next step would be to choose how you want to share and use the storage; I mostly recommend NextCloud for beginners/intermediates, super easy to setup and start using out of the box.

For you I would recommend following my comment. Once you're comfortable with wanting to make your own NAS, then I would recommend you to look into hardware and start planning out a build. If it is too expensive, look towards small, mini computers like rpi, thinkcenter, librecomputer, etc. and then slowly expand from there.

Yes, making a NAS is expensive at the start, if you do decide to make one with all brand new gear, but it is worth it for your privacy imo. The trip is long, sometimes annoying as fuck, but the end-result is infinitely better.

If you have questions let me know!

  • Would recommend self hosting the drive aspect, cheaper and you retain your own information all the while.

Pixel phones are fine with a custom OS. Linux phones are horrible both with user interface and battery life.

Instead of black hole (which has horrible catalog of music) or Musify, just selfhost Deemix+Navidrome.

Instead of startpage use something more reputable like qwant or duckduckgo.

Proton can be debatable because of it's past, though they have since fixed it. Alternatives include : tutanota, mailbox.org, etc. Alot of good email alternatives exist.

  • Another benefit of moving to lemmy, less tracking. Win win, I must say.

Edit: another 3 year old post. Sorting by hot is more than definitely bugged... Hope they fix it somewhat soon, cause idk what is going on.

  • Mine got destroyed within 6 months of using. I walk a lot, bike from time to time with them, but never any extreme stuff. The stitching on the left sides of my shoes are practically gone, showing the insole from the outside... I guess it depends on which shoe you get from vans, since I am certain I've had pairs last longer than this.

  • Pretty sure to make those chicken legs all you do is take a knife and push all the meat towards one end. My wife makes the best "lollipop" chicken, though I'm not 100% sure on the method.
