  • is my account and all its posts, comments, activity and bookmarks just gonna be gone?

You will not be able to log into your account. Your account history (profile, posts and comments) will still be visible on other instances (the ones that already exist, any new ones will not be able to fetch content from lemm.ee) in read-only.

Your bookmarks and subscriptions can be exported on the settings page (that, of cause, needs to be done before you loose access to your account). After that they can be imported to a different instance from file.

I also recomend to put a link to your new account in the profile of your old account so that people would be able to find you. It can be done like this: "@username@instance.url". For me it is "@khorovodoved@lemm.ee". That way it would work even after lemm.ee will shut down. Only do that beforehand, so it has time to federate.

  • The plot of instance admins to hide the fact that they were asked to post that would be a conspiracy. Yes, it would be reasonable for devs to ask them that. And it would be reasonable for admins to mention that in their posts.

Also, lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works is not "all over lemmy". They have full support on .ml and hexbear and significant support on .ee.

  • Where, once again, there are no proofs of such actions. And I do not believe that major instance admins would participate in such conspiracy to hide the fact that they are posting this under request and not on their free will.

  • Well, if the instance owner has a political narrative he would push it. Because he believes that it is a good thing. Test instance or not.

The only option I see is that someone else would offer them his instance (which has to be rather popular) for test purposes. But that would not do anything to .ml because then they would just pay for .ml from their pocket (which against comes from development funding).

And denying lemmy development funding would do nothing to .ml because .ml running costs are too small. So it would just continue to work on the latest version with developers hotfixing things only for their instance as they break.

  • The law is a law. Their aims do not override it. They are getting what any sane person would expect. Nothing prevented them from separating their legal and shady operations to separate entities. That, at least, would prevent compromising the whole operation. If someone puts his head in a lion mouth, it is still his fault, at least partially, that lion kills him.

It's not like they're distributing the latest Marvel slop.

I doubt this argument will hold in court.

  • My point still stands.

The developer is registered in Latvia. Yes, it had at one point connection to Russia, so what? A lot of software was developed in Russia. Nginx, for example, that does not prevent millions of websites from using it.

Users leaving OnlyOffice is mostly about enterprise edition (paid) users. In fact, many of them left enterprise version for the Foss version.

  • Can Internet Archive just stop copyright violations?

Do not get me wrong, I am all for piracy, but usually pirate websites hide themself (like libgen, for example), so that no lawsuit possesses a threat to the resource itself or resource owners.

IA, on the other hand, are pretentious pirates. They either believe that they are untouchable or just do not care in general. And when it causes expected result once again, they start running around asking for help and telling how dangerous it is for their entire work.

  • The comment above is wrong. OnlyOffice is available under both Foss (Community Edition) and proprietary (Enterprise Edition) licenses. The proprietary version is paid and offers some additional features like extended support.

  • Just install terminfo.

It is intended behavior, almost every terminal requires terminfo. It is just that terminfo for most popular (or older) ones comes preinstalled.

All new niche terminal suffer from it. Foot has the same problem.
