  • You don't have to but I wouldn't naturalise in her situation either. Under no circumstances would I pledge allegiance to a country that I felt wasn't mine and if I had a green card I wouldn't bother.

That's not to say I might not feel that way about another country in the future but as I said my sister has been living in the UK for over two thirds of her life and would never consider getting a British passport. Even her adult daughter chooses an Irish one.

If you don't mind me asking why bother with the dual citizenship? And did you feel any weirdness pledging yourself to the second country?

  • Regardless, 40 years here and hasn't naturalized yet? Odd.

Nothing odd about it. An Irish passport is measurably better than an American one.

Edit: You can live in a different country for the vast majority of your life and still feel like it's not your home country. My sister has lived in the UK for over forty years and is very much Irish.

  • The old bigot who lived next door to me growing up called me a tater tot

Prick. I heard two young American girls refer to the Irish as potatoes, in Dublin. They thought nobody could hear them then were properly embarrassed when they saw me.

  • Wild. Our house has six and I'd feed us all for the week for about 180 euro / 200 USD. We cook all our meals though, with some exceptions like occasional frozen pizza or chicken nuggets for convenience.

I spent a summer in the US in the late 90s and I remember basically everything being cheaper there at the time but we have lots of discount supermarkets here now that we didn't then.

  • Jesus, Mary and Joseph and all his carpenter friends what the fuck did you spend 700 dollars on? Is that US?

Like I know you said groceries and various toiletries but the curiosity is tickling me.

  • It depends on the funeral tbh. Where I'm from anyway suits would generally only be family and close friends.

Pope's funeral though? Black I'd consider appropriate.

  • The article says:

Shortly after midnight early Saturday morning

So it's probably what most of us would call "Friday night" but it's still after midnight in fairness which is quite late.

  • Yeah definitely. There was an urban legend in the same company about Saudi visitors before my time and they went WILD. Strip clubs, 5am finish, the works.

And yeah yer man just was not used to drink in any way. Poor bastard. I'd say the fear and hangover combo must have been something else to wake up to.

  • Yeah to be honest I feel like there was a decent bit of social pressure that he felt. The CEO was a fairly hard character in general but the lad in question was well liked. The "fuck off" did shock us all though.

Like none of us would have been surprised if he'd been let go but it would have affected morale generally, laws here are generally worker oriented and he was a good worker, plus the added effect of visa removal has to be part of the decision process.

The guy who wrestled him into the taxi definitely put in a good word too. He's a good soul.

Edit: the belligerence was only half the story on the negative side. We were all very embarrassed that the staff had to clean up the puke but they were absolute champions about it. I've worked as a waiter for a good few years in college and you do tend to just pass these things off as best you can, especially for large groups that are going to leave a solid tip.

  • Just for clarity.... The lad shaved his pubes, lobbed them in a bag then brought them into work and sought your counsel on whether or not he had crabs? Is that right? because I'm rolling around here picturing the absurdity of it.

  • European and I love the Aussie and Canada communities. The Europe ones are good too but I feel like there's more banter in those other ones. The Ireland one is picking up steam which is great.

!tenforward@lemmy.world too for the Star Trek memes. I watched TNG through with my now 18 year old when she was about 10-11 and I'm in the middle of it with my 11 year old now so I send them on and we have a good laugh.

They're both amazed that new Star Trek the next generation memes are still being made on the daily.

I also get silly laughs out of !noncredibledefense@lemmy.world and !roughromanmemes@lemmy.world .

Shout out to /u/PugJesus for the Roman memes. I try to throw OC in there if I ever dream any up but that's not often.

  • Christmas party, of course. We had an Indian dude join the company. Really nice lad that I got on great with.

There's a company meal kicking off at 7pm not far from where we work so the entire office (about 40 odd people) decide we'll get a few scoops in beforehand.

Well this lad was quite small and very obviously not used to drink. He was fairly toasted before we even got to the restaurant. He kept drinking then became belligerent.

Proceeded to puke all over the place half way through the meal. He went out to get some fresh air and the CEO went out to have a chat with him and suggested he head home.

Promptly told the CEO to fuck off and leave him alone.

My bestie was his boss and at that point basically wrestled him into a taxi. The CEO took it well in fairness. It was totally out of character so he kept his job (and his visa which was dependent on the job).

  • Just back from pints with a French lad. Just the two of us. Fucking love the French. Absolutely superb folks.

  • It's hard to describe but it's not snobbery. The French are just themselves and I honestly love them for it. I'd heartily recommend a visit.

I was there one time for work and decided I'd have a steak. Well I know they cook steak rarer than elsewhere so hoping for medium I ordered well done.

Terrible mistake. I got what was basically a lump of raw meat that should have had "get fucked" stamped on it and I felt like I brought it on myself.

  • America, again get your fucking house in order.

It is genuinely upsetting to watch from the outside as a cold war baby who has visited the states a heap of times and is really fond of the place but this about sums it up.

  • That's exactly what you get when you don't punch the bully back. Russia broke the well defined post WW2 rule. It was a pretty simple rule too.... Don't try to rob your neighbour's land.

They should not be rewarded in any way for it. If anything they already have been.

  • When they got banned, we got stuck with paper ones for 25c

Cheeky bastards! We had a single use for €0.25 for a while but that's long gone. Paper bags are still free. They're generally small unless you're buying clothes or whatever. You definitely wouldn't be bagging the weekly shop with them but most places offer free boxes from the shelf stocking leftovers.

They also released $15 "washable paper bags" that I don't understand who is the target audience.

Very, very rich people is the answer. Surely the amount of energy to wash one is not that far off a fresh paper bag.
