Both can be true at the same time. Therapy and meds can be wonderful to help create a better world than the soul-crushing dystopia we're currently heading for.
While I do agree (or at least hope) that we all have the agency to positively influence our own lives and those around us, the main point there in my opinion is that different people have different resources in life.
Someone that's experienced systemic racism, or someone who's brain is a wee bit non-standard just has it harder than someone not experiencing these issues.
The YouTube Channel Kurzgesagt has proposed a calendar based on the 'Human Era' (HE) instead of before/after christ format.
It's based on the first monument of large-scale human cooperation (building a temple in modern-day turkey) and is quite elegant in my opinion. It 'simply' adds 10.000 years to the calendar we're all already used to. :)
Behave by Robert Sapolsky. It's an excellent book if you're trying to understand why the people around you are like.. well, that way.
But if you didn't study neuroscience, you'll likely have to re-read it to get at least the most important points to stick.
I've read Suicide Island a while back until I was up-to-date at the time, that fits the bill. It's by Kouji Mori, who was a close friend of Kentaro Miura and is now involved with the continuation of Berserk as far as I know.
Besides that, I probably don't need to tell you that Vagabond and Vinland Saga are excellent.
Lone Wolf and Cub is also really good in my opinion, albeit pretty old by now.
There are alternatives like ..not sure what it's called in english. Mastika? Mastiha? It's a tree resin from the mediterranean that's been used for that weird greek rezina wine. It's an acquired taste, but I personally really like it.
