TL;DR from their(newpipe's) reddit:
Youtube did an update that added an additonal parameter to the calls, allegedly as an anti-bot tactic.

Because of how it worked, it broke all of the various frontends, but Invidious based access still worked.

They posted a release candidate that fixed the issue to Github first, then I picked it up from their site several days ago.

That's what I would expect too, best case is they had the same tent to work.

I suspect they might not have had that.

Based on the article, the problem is that Github isn't being treated as legacy software, but isn't able to load a full file using the currently popular JS framework they are using.

This. Cant bring it back unless its a complete slate wipe. Even then, they'd need to revolutionize the formula.
