  • I think you're just experiencing a usable UX experience though. You're not talking about anything except one desktop environment.

Your uptime is better. Your resource usage is more sane. Your ability to control what you do and don't want on your machine is better.

That's really the bigger win for you from what I'm reading.

  • This doesn't go into a great deal, but a lot of reasons 18th and 19th century cuisines resemble each other is because people literally had to live out of wagons, and you'd catch whatever you could for protein, boil it whatever seeds or vegetables you could find, and that's what you'd love on for possibly days at a time.

If someone knows, I can't remember it, but there was a fascinating book from the 80's which was a dictated biography of a Siberian frontiersman who detailed the horrible things they'd have to eat to stay alive, like boiled bark and tree sap, dirt stew, and dead animals (also stewed) that were frozen, so preserved. It's a hard, hard fucking reality when you consider how people can just go to stores and get stuff in the modern age.

  • I did read it, and my comment is exactly referencing the attitude of the author which is "It's good enough, so you should use it". I disagree, and say it's another dumbass shortcut to cash grab on a less than stellar ecosystem and product. It's training wheels for failure.

  • Keep it segregated from your internal network, no password auth, or better yet, install a privatenet client (Tailscale, Zerotier...etc) and don't open SSH ports at all, consider using a Cloudflare Tunnel or similar...that's a basic start.

Honestly, if you're serving a static site, just deploy it on Digitalocean Apps or R2 for free and skip all the worry and get all the Cloudflare protection built-in.

  • And that's not even letting on that literally ALL DNS queries work from cache unless you are specifically doing a live query.

None of your software is. It's asking your OS. Your OS is asking your resolver service. Your resolver service is asking your router. Your router is 5000% caching DNS queries.
