  • FTA:

"he’ll be required to be in court for his four criminal trials across four jurisdictions, and those could last for weeks at a time while voting is underway."

By point of comparison, Fani Willis' last big RICO trial was for a Georgia school cheating scandal, 12 defendants, and it took EIGHT MONTHS.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_Public_Schools_cheating_scandal

For a bunch of teachers, test coordinators, and administrators.

Trying a former President and his lawyers could easily take a year or more.

  • Go home Prince Harry, you're drunk. 😉

  • You guys are both getting a little hot and bothered without fully understanding just how fucked up this whole system is.

First, to the point that 40K for a 2 year degree is insane, yeah it is. But you're forgetting that there are student loan agencies out there who PREY on kids like this. Their business model is inherently exploitaitive and, yeah, they're going to saddle a student with as much debt as they can extract from them while making them all kinds of promises in order to extract more debt.

Second, I totally buy 40K in debt given predatory loans like the above, but you should acknowledge that your situation is abnormal. My wife is carrying 40K in student loan debt, after 20 years, never really being able to use either of her degrees (plural) but that $40K is for BOTH a 4 year bachelors (print journalism... right before the industry tanked) and a 2 year AA (paralegal).

Third, carrying debt for community college shouldn't take away from the fact that community college should be free. I'm sorry you got screwed, really I am, but you getting screwed shouldn't mean everyone else needs the opportunity to get screwed too.

I'd argue State colleges should be free as well.

  • By that argument they could do split screen for Baldur's Gate 3 if they just ran it at 640x480 in 16 colors, but who would play it? :)

  • I'd say we need to bring back Schoolhouse Rock, but we need to bring back Saturday Morning Cartoons first. :)

  • Interesting... that's the 2nd video game based on a book that I had no idea was a book.

The other being S.T.A.L.K.E.R. which was based on the book Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, who are also Russian.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_Picnic

Now we have a whole rabbit hole of Russian genre fiction!

  • Another person already said Stanislaw Lem, so I'm going to take a side route and suggest one of my favorite series...

BUUUT... It's not sci fi. It's still genre fiction, but rather modern dark fantasy.

The Night Watch books by Sergei Lukyanenko

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_(Lukyanenko_novel)

Premise is that magicians, wizards, vampires, witches, werewolves, sorceresses, they're all real. The forces of light and dark were at war for centuries before they came to an agreement. The forces of dark would limit their activities to licensed behaviors, policed by the Night Watch, and similarly the forces of light would restrict themselves, policed by the Day Watch.

Now, here's the problem... Lukyanenko is a Russian nationalist of Ukranian heritage. He fully supports the war in Ukraine.

The books have nothing to do with it and were largely written even before the Crimea invasion, but since then Lukyanenko has made a large number of unfortunate comments.

So how much you enjoy the works is going to depend on how much you can separate them from the author. ☹️

  • You're not wrong, but the other fact is the current gen Series S is less capable than the last gen Xbox One X, with less RAM and much slower RAM.

To the point where the Series S can't run backwards compatible titles with Xbox One X enhancements.

  • Not really... The S only has 10GB of RAM compared to 16 in the X, and the ram it does have runs at less than 1/2 the speed.

8GB of the 10 runs at 224GB/s, the remaining 2GB runs at 56GB/s. That is not a typo.

This is so poor, the S can't even run the backwards compatible titles with Xbox One X enhancements. The Xbox One X had 12GB running at 336GB/s.

By comparison, the Xbox Series X has 16GB of RAM with 10 running at 560GB/s and 6GB running at 336GB/s

This is why Baldur's Gate 3 is delayed on the platform, they can't get split screen working with the meager RAM available in the S.

Fortunately, Microsoft has abandoned the feature parity requirement on the S and X, they can launch thr game without split screen on the S.

  • This story was used to good effect in the comic issue Fantastic Four #275.

    https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Fantastic_Four_Vol_1_275

She Hulk was suntanning on the top of the Baxter building, and some jerks in a helicopter blew off her bathing suit and got some topless photos.

They sold them to some shady skin magazine, and even though She Hulk sued, couldn't stop them from going to print...

Where the printer color corrected everything to remove the green, just showing an angry woman on a roof.

They even referenced the Star Trek story in the book.

  • American here, but I'm sure someone will correct me... that's Indonesia, right?

    I guess it's close... Ind(ones)ia.

  • It's really simple...

You come into a community talking shit about the company who produces the device it's organized around.

You claim poor customer support from a company known for excellent customer support.

When asked for proof of those claims, you link to other Lemmy threads instead of your communications with Valve.

    Think of it like this...

If I went into a, I dunno, Nike community and said "Nike shoes suck! Customer service won't help me!" and when people ask for proof, my reaction is "Yeah, fuck you, I don't have to prove anything!"

That would make me a giant troll and a huge loser.

Sooo... put up or shut up. We're waiting!

  • We're all in uncharted territory here so nobody REALLY knows... but here are some scenarios:

    1. Trump is convicted and sentenced to jail before the election. 14th Amendment comes into play and the Republicans are forced to replace him as a candidate.
    2. Trump is convicted and sentenced to jail after the election, this is going to depend on if he actually wins the election or not. If he wins, expect a pardon on the Federal charges (January 6th trial in Washington D.C., Documents charges in Florida), but CANNOT be pardoned for the State charges in New York and Georgia.

And yeah, there's no proof a President can pardon themselves, so he steps down for 5 minutes, passes power to his VP and has his VP do it. We're beyond shame at this point, there's nothing preventing that.

14th Amendment doesn't come into play as the insurrection charges are federal charges.

Likely he's removed from office to go to jail, Vice President takes over.

    1. Not convicted and either wins the election and takes over, or loses the election and we do this all over again in 2028.

Interesting note, if he is not convicted, in other words, the court finds nothing wrong with the playbook to use false electors to reverse the election, there is literally nothing preventing Biden and Harris from doing the exact same thing.
