  • I see you avoided answering my question, so it's a lot harder to give you hard facts, but let's look at a hypothetical purchase in Lithuania.

First, you don't seem to understand how tariffs work. We don't pay tariffs on exports. We pay it on imports. Let's say you sell a widget from your page for $10. To get it into the USA, I'd have to pay you $10, and Uncle Sam $2. Doesn't matter how much you sell or don't sell. The shitgibbon has demanded his 20%, and so if I were to buy something from you, I'd have to give $0.20 for every $1.00 I give you.

But that's just the start of the hurt. European Union countries are likely to tariff us back. So if you order your raw materials from the USA, your own country is gonna be standing there with its hand out. That 4.56 EUR you were going to pay a US company also has a 0.91 EUR extra charge added to it by your country. So you raise from $10.00 to $11.00 to make up that extra 0.91 EUR...which then means I have to pay $2.20 to the Shitgibbon, pushing my price up to $13.20 US, JUST so you can still make your profit target.

Some countries are mulling export taxes as well. Ontario, for example, is putting a 25% export tariff on electricity shipped to the northern US. If Lithuania decides that widgets need a 20% export tariff, now, suddenly, your 10.04 EUR item now has Lithuania holding its hand out looking for 2.00 EUR. You're not gonna want to eat that, so your price needs to increase so you get the same profit as before. Let's say...13 EUR to make up the tariff margin (you end up giving 2.60 EUR to Lithuania, and are still giving 5.47 EUR to your supplier, leaving you with 4.93 left over), and now I'm paying $14.21 plus $2.84, for a total of 17.05. And this is all before you start talking about charging me even more.

Digital products may currently escape this, so if you're offering software or PDFs or NFTs or whatnot, you might indeed be not worried about the immediate nonsense going down.

I have no problem with you if you're raising your prices on platforms that take a bigger cut of your sales. I'd suggest you shop around for better platforms, and nothing says you have to use US platforms. I'd support you on an EU platform if that meant I paid less and you got paid more. It just seemed you were saying you were going to target Americans more just 'cause. We didn't all vote for the Shitgibbon over here.

As for your last three paragraphs? Yeah. "Preaching to the Choir" is what I'd tell you on that. Yes, the tariffs are stupid. And Trump is golfing while the economy burns.

  • Every place in the world has douchebags in it. I'm sure that the share of douchebags even among California voters is actually much larger than 38.3%, once you figure in the assholes who voted for someone else beside Trump (not to mention the people who didn't vote at all). And you guys have your own Trump, Poilievre. Every country has assholes. Don't forget that.

  • Eh, what do you sell and on which platform? I'd like to avoid you, firstly, and secondly, knowing that will give me an idea of what to tell you to expect.

I'm buying less these days. Going on less vacations. Picking up fewer wants, and limiting my purchases to needs. Reducing the amount of money I spend. I am seeing it as more money is going into savings now than when Biden was POTUS. Gonna need to do that because everything's about to get more expensive. I need to get used to doing more with less, because otherwise, I'm going to take it right in the chin. As will many of my American counterparts.

You might escape scott free. Or you might not. Your country likely is tariffing everything from the USA, and the USA is likely tariffing you as well. You might find fewer people buy your stuff because not ONLY has the US tariffed money out of your buyers, you're exploiting them as well, meaning they get double hit. While it's your right to set your price to what you want, don't be surprised if your sales take a hit. Also, it's a very douchebag move to take advantages of your customers...just like what the Shitgibbon would do, so I do hope your customers look elsewhere for their sales. Too bad we as Americans don't have that luxury to avoid tariffs.

  • Excellent point. I'm no political expert, but I can see that what we're doing right now isn't working. No matter how much we point out how awful the Right is, we aren't winning voters because they aren't really seeing it. For the person who thinks an immigrant took his job and is why he's not getting ahead today, hearing that a bunch of them got loaded on a plane and taken to an El Salvadorian gulag isn't a bad thing. It's a good thing, because that's fewer undesirables polluting the country and 'taking our jerbs'. It also doesn't affect them. Who cares if some brown dad from Maryland got sent to the gulag by accident. That's somebody else's problem. The people we're trying to reach don't care about that. If sending the Browns to a labour camp brings the price of eggs down, then well, too bad so sad, send 'em all off so Ah can get muh eggs 'n' gas for cheapah! Murica fuck yeah!

Let's get real. All our bloviating about how dumb the GQP is and how evil they are serves once purpose -- preaching to the choir. We keep insulting their intelligence, insisting they have no plan, saying we're smarter than they are, and accusing their voters of being morons barely able to breathe on their own, but we keep losing elections to these supposed morons. Our leadership and our pundits have forgotten the most important role for leaders and pundits -- convincing people that we're right and the other side is wrong. Meanwhile, the GQP has cornered the information space, sent us reeling, gotten enough people to stay home, vote third party, or actually vote for their shitheads, and basically shock and awe us in 2016 AND 2024. Really, if you stop and look at how well we got outplayed, you gotta question who the real morons are. Doubly so now that they're in power, and rather than stepping back and pointing out the resulting shitshow is 100% on Team Red, we're helping them fuck the country over, repeatedly. That really fits us for the dunce cap in my book.

I hope that AOC and Sanders' message sticks. I think it's a good one. As billionaires get tax cuts while we pay more and more for essentials, the message that we're being fucked by the moneyed class should stick harder. While it wasn't enough to win us those two Florida seats (an awful lot of awful people still vote in Florida), it DID seem to reverse our fortunes in Wisconsin, and we managed to keep the courts liberal over there. But even this has its flaws. I think a lot of people have the idea that Democrats are just a party of talking, not of action. And that idea isn't wholly unearned. Democrats do have a habit of throwing their hands up and giving up when the going gets tough. What they need to do is fire up Billy Ocean and rise to the occasion, fighting for all our rights and convincing through both words and actions that they are the better chance. We'll never pick off the hard-core Q-Anon nutcases, but if we can convince some of the 7 million that didn't vote for Trump in 2020 but did in 2024 to stay home or vote third party, if not vote for us, and we can get some of the 90m that stayed home in 2024 to turn out now for the Democrats, that's good. Here's hoping that Democrats put actions to the words we're seeing right now, otherwise this will be short-lived. And all we'll have is the ability to shake our fists at the evil, stupid Republicans.

  • A lot of people were pushing the meme that Harris was worse somehow than Trump, and that they'd stay home or vote third party because nothing Trump could do would be worse than what Harris and the Democrats were doing RE: Gaza.

Gaza is now being slated for demolition and rebuilding by a shyster and shithead, and Israel is escalating its war, while Ukraine is now left hanging in the breeze. All thanks to those people.

Good job, people. You made it worse.

  • As well they should be. It's not the individual cabinet member, or the voting for shitty right-wing immigration laws, or giving Trump cover with his budget bill. It's all this put together. Schumer and ilk don't give two shits about standing up for what's right. They want to coast to those cushy post-election jobs. If the cost to getting progressives into office is these shitheads get cushy lobbying jobs, I'm fine with that, as long as the Progressives turn away from the cashola and represent us while thumbing Trump and the Republicans in the eyes...hard.

  • I'm going to take a different tact here, just based on interactions with Canadians.

My Canadian friends know that I'm not a Trump supporter. They know that I have wanted to get out of the US for years now, and that I think the US has gone to shit and is now overrun by fascists. But that doesn't mean they can exempt me from the hurt they need to put on the US. That's not how it works. They've got to hit the USA back where it hurts, and that means in the pocketbook. And that means we all are in the brawl. They line up shoulder to shoulder and go elbows up because solidarity is where it's at when your former buddies from across the way punch you in the face unexpectedly. What I don't understand is how Americans could have expected Canadians to just roll over and take it. I mean, the Canadian national sport is Hockey, where going 'elbows up' is something you can expect on a regular basis. And we're now in the virtual equivalent of a Hockey brawl (and can be in a very real one if we dare think we can just invade -- last time we did that, they burned down the White House!).

31% of American voters aren't the only people who need to suffer, either. You're counting the 77m people who voted Trump in that number, and pointing out that 75m voted Harris. Well, what about the 2m who voted third part and the 90m+ people who stayed home? Doncha think those people have some responsibility for Trump? And how exactly are the Canadians and Europeans supposed to know which group you are part of? You say you voted Harris, but you can't prove that (and shouldn't want to with the rise of Fascism). You could be a closet Trump supporter that just SAYS you are a Harris supporter, and nobody would know better.

So, in summary, yes. As a Harris voter, you are gonna have to feel the heat from Canada and Europe and the rest of the civilised world. They can't avoid targeting you when they target the entire USA. You're an American, and right now, they have to worry about their people and not the fraction of the USA that voted to stay sane. The best they can do is try to rescue the 'good' Americans, but right now, even that's a step too far because American economics has infected them to the point that they can't even house their own populace. So, rather than getting mad at Canadians and Europeans, let's get mad at the real perps here, the shitgibbon and his merry band of miscreants and everyone who enabled that bunch of assholes by voting for them, voting third party, or staying home.
