  • It was turned off, as required by US sanctions.

He refused to turn it on, when Ukraine asked.

He gloated about how not turning it on prevented WW3.

Now he's got a DoD contract for it, and presumedly does whatever they tell him.

...but I've already been accused of this being "original research", so just let people rage about it, it's what people like to do.

  • And thus, the myth of "stock owners have anything to say" gets dispelled: you put money on a retirement fund, that buys ETFs, that buy TSLA, that does whatever Musk wants... and you can do nothing about it.

"Vote with your wallet", except someone took it from you 😖

  • He could sell it to a shell company that could redirect it to pornhub... that ought to make the trick and stop all media from still referring to 𝕏 as "Twitter", without the risk of someone using it to compete with 𝕏.

  • [Sorry beforehand if this sounds like a defense of Musk...]

I've recently seen a documentary about a con man who used to go to galas, photoshoots and stuff, asking if he could "just take a selfie" with popular/influential people... then use those photos as "proof" to his victims of how he had "powerful friends" and "knew the right people".

He's (presumedly) scammed between half and several million that way, convincing people to invest, to work for him recruiting people to invest, to hold shell companies for him, and so on.

So... "taking a selfie with Elon Musk", could be more of a "whoever takes the selfie" thing, rather than a Musk thing.

  • because F-16s will absolutely be able to achieve what Su-27s couldn't... Because, reasons I guess?

We've been over this: because F-16s have updated hardware (radars, ECMs, etc.) that couldn't be retrofit into a Su-27.

This war lives and dies on attrition and logistical superiority

That too. This wouldn't be a war in the first place if Russia hadn't fucked up their initial logistics so severely.

By your reasoning [...] this counteroffensive was a severe tactical blunder

    Personally, that's my opinion, yes.

I think they've done it to "boost morale" by hopefully regaining "some" territory before the whole place turns into a mud bath, but from a tactical point of view, yes, I think they should have waited it out, stick to defense and drones for the time being.

  • Ukraine is already protected from those magnificent Russian Su-57s, they don't need F-16s for that. All Ukraine needs is to keep maybe 5 of those F-16s in the air over whatever scrap of land they happen to be trying to take back at any given moment. And yes, those pieces of land are going to be much smaller than Taiwan, what matters is that piece by piece, they will no longer be under Russian control.

  • how commercial jets vs. private jets vs. light aircraft fare

Just looked some up, they're approximately, per passenger:

    • -, bus, ~100...300mpg/pp
    • Commercial jet, -, ~60...120mpg/pp
    • Ultralight, motorbike, train, ~50mpg/pp
    • Light aircraft, car, ~15...60mpg/pp
    • Private jet, limo, ~5...50mpg/pp
    • Fighter jet, monster truck, ~0.5mpg/pp

The more passengers, the more efficient.

So, fully loaded, there isn't that much difference between a private jet, a limo, a car, light aircraft, ultralight, motorbike, train, or low range commercial jet.

But if it's a single person, a private jet would use 10 times more fuel than a motorbike.

A fully loaded bus, still wins hands down.

  • Yeah... I learned Spanish in Mexico as a wee lad, the folk living North of there were called "Gringos" or "Yankees". Back in Europe, behind the iron curtain, it was "Americaniard" or "Yank", rarely "American"... even when people meant no disrespect.

Then in Spain... (@PRUSSIA_x86@lemmy.world, you may want to see this)... "American" refers to any citizen of the whole continent... even the official dictionary itself, in it's latest update, actually states:

debe evitarse el empleo de americano para referirse exclusivamente a los habitantes de los Estados Unidos, uso abusivo que se explica por el hecho de que los estadounidenses utilizan a menudo el nombre abreviado América (en inglés, sin tilde) para referirse a su país. No debe olvidarse que América es el nombre de todo el continente y son americanos todos los que lo habitan.

    https://www.rae.es/dpd/Estados%20Unidos

The use of American to refer exclusively to the inhabitants of the United States should be avoided, an abusive use that is explained by the fact that Americans often use the abbreviated name America (in English, without accent) to refer to their country. It should not be forgotten that America is the name of the entire continent and all those who inhabit it are Americans.

So yeah, kind of like nicknames... but then some places have different rules about the nicknames. 😉

(...and then there are the actually vulgar despective nicknames, which I won't get into here)

  • Guess it depends on what we call "censorship". Is it state enacted censorship of personal opinions? Is it censorship of porn? Is it how many reporters get killed each year?

At least the US has the 1st amendment; a lot of countries don't, or circumvent free speech laws with censorship in one way or another (free speech for me, not for thee).

  • Oh... that makes sense.

I keep a lemmy.ee account just to subscribe to bot populated communities. I also don't get "spammed", since I only check the Subscribed feed on there, but All looks like a mess.

One of the n-th things I miss on Lemmy, is creating custom feeds without having to jump instances. And for admins to be able to decide what goes into their All.
