  • Even those are riddled with proprietary devices. Cars have had a CAN bus network of devices for decades. These closed smarts alone have caused things like the emissions scandal. These alone interfere with right to repair and competition. What is new is the spying and direct control, but the problem is older than that.

  • Nope. The vandalism is by the troll farms and a weapon of the quiet information war waging against reality.

  • Unfortunately there is no car that isn't proprietary and even ones without "auto pilot" have things like collision detection that can slam on the breaks for you.

  • This is any consumtion at any level. This whole story hangs on if any alcohol consumption, at all, under 13 leads to harm. Something they have one quote on.

“People tend to have this perception that introducing children to moderate drinking is a good way of teaching them safer drinking habits. This is untrue. The earlier a child drinks, the more likely they are to develop problems with alcohol in later life.”

To date, in recent decades, each generation in UK, and elsewhere, drinks less alchole issue than the previous.

    I did find:

    https://alcoholchange.org.uk/help-and-support/get-help-now/family-and-friends/alcohol-and-your-child

"There is no clear answer as to which approach is best but, overall, there is little evidence that letting children try alcohol makes them less likely to develop problems with it later on. In fact, research has found that children, whose parents allow them to drink at home and/or provide them with alcohol, are probably more likely to drink more heavily when they are older."

So it could be we are heading for a fresh boozing generation after years of decline. But it is not clear.

  • Maybe they mean pigeon to make it sound like he isn't able to be a seagull manager. Like he's trying to be a seagull manager, but only managed pigeon manager. A quiet insult.

  • How would non-American consumers feel about the US government controlling there cars? Not sure all American consumers would be happy with that either. Why it's OK for a company to have that power over your car is another issue....

  • They are "too big to fail now". If they pop now, the ruins will be bought quickly. The car won't be allowed to brick. But it is good to highlight the issue that modern car need to be independ of the existence of manufacturers servers. I'd go further and regulate that it must be documented protocols and you must able to change the servers used if you choose.

Same with any computer, if you don't have admin, you don't own it.

  • Isn't that an argument of monopoly by Netflix would be better?

  • China does have a habit of market dumplings. It doesn't play nice with trade. But no where does. China is just very good at flooding market with stuff that is artificially cheap. By say, not bothering to test it meets the regulations of the market. Or using slave trade. Or just straight subsidiaries.

Also all modern cars, EV or otherwise, and straight spy machines.

China is a problem, but cars isn't where I'd start. (As long as they have been proved safe). I'd start with cheap electronics that don't meet regulations all over Amazon and EBay. A lot is just environmentally bad as it's just throwaway. Some is a fire risk.

China is just very good at dystopian capitalism.

  • Rust is certainly interesting. I think it's the C++ we need.

  • Yes, I think Rust is a better C++ and will replace it in many places. Though all three will be around for ever to be honest.

  • He is is OK with OOP. The Linux kernel is full of OPP C, but he doesn't like C++

  • Lots of core UNIX and Linux projects are. C++ is not liked by a lot of low level FOSS community. I think Rust is going to get further into these areas. I know C++ well but prefer C. I know plenty of others who feel the same.

  • Storing offline is great and all, but I hope everyone is storing on multiple disks at multiple locations....

Yer didn't think so, I'm sure photos are being lost.

  • Closed app by data mining company, of course they get all the data they can.

  • Enshittification of stuff wired into your brain is a bit terrifying.

  • Yep. This stuff must be open source. The owner should be the actual owner, with full administration rights, and source and schematic.

  • It's all on unsustainable borrowing from the future, so it's all an illusion. Even if they win the war, they may not recoup that enough. Putin has gone all in on this.

  • Reading that does not make you think good economy.
