  • Could you outline an example? I understand your perspective and feelings on the matter, but maybe if we could see a transcript, we could see exactly how this trait is manifesting, and we could analyze better what was happening here.

  • I went through a period where I binge watched a bunch of episodes of that show, but I read that it was difficult to convict some of the people they caught because adults posing as children to lure people into getting arrested is considered entrapment or something. Therefore, their method of catching them could be considered unlawful, leading to the case being thrown out.

  • When I started using Lightroom, I was the same. Lots of things looked so cool to me, largely due to the novelty, and I cranked up a lot of settings much higher than they needed to be. Eventually, that novelty of fake grain and various filters wears off, and you start feeling like your pictures don't need "so much of this" or deciding that just cause something looks cool doesn't mean you think it looks good after all. After just a few months, I was already looking back on previous edits and thinking, "Yikes." It's just part of the journey.

  • I think the problem is that between lightning cables and USB-C, one is made by an asshole company who wants you to use it for your phone and literally nothing else, and one is useful for your phone and literally everything else.

  • It does, and then I found out some people actually use mistakes like that to drive engagement because it makes people comment their posts and videos just to correct them, effectively boosting the post. Now, it annoys me even more.

  • As I understand it, the foxes were specifically bred to not just tolerate human interaction but to enjoy it and crave it. The thing is that that is selective breeding over the course of a couple dozen generations in less than 100 years.

Most of the animals that are currently domesticated have had thousands of years of selective breeding, so there are all kinds of specific behavioral or physical traits that they do or do not have.

Ironically, that kind of hyperspecific breeding for only a few traits is what leads a lot of modern dog breeds to have various health problems associated with their breeds because they are bred for aesthetic and not for health or longevity. A common example is the obsessive compulsive disorder bread into the dog that is associated with bull terriers or the hip dysplasia that is associated with German shepherds due to being bred to have more and more deeply sloped backs.

  • To add insult to injury, the mom was flying to her brother's funeral when, upon deboarding the plane plane, they were stopped by cops and questioned under suspicion of human trafficking. Can't imagine how rough the whole trip was for her.

  • Nope, but after researching everything you'd need to do to provide a suitable environment for a capybara, it seems super unfeasible. Besides breeding a desire for human companionship into capybaras, they require huge enclosures and access to large bodies of water since they're semi aquatic. Furthermore, the water would need to be thermally regulated and regularly filtered because that's where they defecate and stuff.

You can alter a creature's biology and behavior with domestication to an extent, but it seems like you'd have to be filthy rich or overhaul what a capybara is just to make having one as a pet a humane option.

They'll just have to keep being our buddies in the wild (or in dedicated sanctuaries).

  • Yes, it literally means "lowlands", but that's its actual name used by the people from that country in the primary language of the people from that country.

Holland is just a region in the Netherlands (today the provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland collectively), but people refer to the entire country as "Holland" sometimes.
