  • They take any presence of minorities as part of an agenda to, uh, I don't know what exactly. They always screech about an agenda but I don't think even they know what the agenda is supposed to be about.

  • Oh absolutely, but it doesn't have to be nefarious; I meant that they can afford to have good lawyers, accountants etc with questionable ethics on their payroll and first of all try to make sure you're not easily caught doing whatever it was he is accused of (don't remember anymore), and who will represent him in courts etc. You know, regular super-rich people shit 😁

Generally even if someone wasn't found guilty of something in a court, you can't necessarily assume that they didn't do whatever they were charged with – all that tells by itself is that guilt couldn't be proven to a level the court was happy with. You'd have to know more details to be able to judge (har har) whether it's likely they really are innocent or not.

I don't remember what it was he supposedly did to get sanctioned, nor if the article has any details about the proceedings, so his "innocence" could well be a more or less proven deal, so I mean the above more in a general sense than specifically related to this particular case

  • Oh yes doi of course, that was just a brain fart. But yes exactly this, it was such a spectacularly gAmEr moment.

  • And I mean, using that information is fine as a basis for investigation would have been fine, it's just that they should have checked it's true before imposing sanctions.

Whether he's actually "innocent" is one thing, but apparently it at least couldn't be proven to a such degree that a court would be satisfied. It's good to keep in mind that he's still an oligarch, though; he has a lot of money and power to throw around

  • Yeah I remember the "waaaa it went woke, Abby is trans" insanity

Edit: no brain, it wasn't Ellie

  • Up until very recently most housing in Finland was co-ops, and it's still extremely common although many new developments are built and owned by corporations which then rent them out.

I live and own shares in a new housing co-op (proportional to the size of my apartment), and all of us together own and run the building and we're renting the property from the city (although you can buy your share of that property off from the city if you don't want to pay that rent.) It's not a perfect system by any means but it's better than corporations owning everything; ideally the people who live in a building are the ones who decide how it's run, but of course that's sort of gone out the window too with rich people just buying properties speculatively and to rent them out. If enough of the shareholders in a building are rent-seekers, upkeep of the building is going to go way down because they don't live there themselves and don't give a shit about whether it's a nice place to live in, they care about making a profit.

  • The v2.0 changes were actually pretty good, made me want to start another playthrough. I really like the new metro system even though it's such a small thing considering everything else they changed, but it's fun to be able to hop onto a metro to get somewhere. The game is already pretty immersive and that small detail just adds to it

  • So not great but much better than Stalin

Although admittledly "better than Stalin" isn't exactly a high bar, considering how spectacularly awful of a person he was. Some level of "excess brutality" is pretty much expected when it comes to Russia and Russian leaders, and Lenin doesn't stand out particularly much in that regard, and he wasn't a sadistic psychopath like Stalin and did genuinely seem to want to bring about a better society for everyone, instead of what they got after Stalin was through.

  • XML has a bad rap because people went a bit (ok a lot) overboard with it in the early years, pretty much like what happens with a lot of other technologies, but as far as structured and human-readable data formats with good schema and tooling support go, it's pretty much unbeatable. Now that JSON is the New Good Tech and XML is the Old Bad Tech, too many developers use JSON where XML would absolutely make more sense, and then we end up with unholy abominations like Portable Text, which is JSON pretending to be XML, and is so incredibly verbose and monumentally stupid that it feels like some sort of joke esolang data format rather than something being used in a production system. But no, here we are, god is dead and JSON is XML.

XML is terrific for building eg. structured markup languages with more complex markup than what something like Markdown can provide, and have the resulting files be comparatively readable, at least in comparison to the JSON-based alternatives – compare HTML to Portable Text, for example. XML has such a bad reputation – partially deservedly – that people just automatically assume it's not a valid tool for anything modern, even when the modern "NoSQL", "structured and typed data is for nerds, suck it" JSON solution is a giant pile of shit compared to the XML alternative

  • They are an existential threat as this point. Not only are they the biggest opposition to climate action, they're also inevitably going to produce more Breiviks (or Hitlers for that matter)

  • Drinking aviation alcohol has long traditions in Russia. Generally I think fuels aren't drinkable (at least more than once) but ethyl alcohol (ie. ethanol) is used in eg. cooling and air conditioning. The Tu-22 is known as the "supersonic booze carrier" because the cockpit air conditioning used 40% ABV ethanol / water mix for coolant, and air and ground crews would drink it and even sell it.

  • Doesn't seem too likely that'd be more than a few percentage points. Which non-Chromium browsers even do this?

  • users can modify their useragent string, and sometimes they have to because some webdevs are morons.

The minority of users do this or even know about UA strings.

some browsers actually default to using chrome instead of its own.

Sure, but Firefox isn't one of them
