  • Keeping animals that have been bred into domestication over thousands of years is different than catching a wild animal and putting it in an enclosure. Corgies don't wish they were out in the wild hunting deer, they want people to pet them. Tigers don't want to be pet no matter how nice the magicians are.

  • The French word for apple is pomme.
The German word for apple is Apfel.

The French word for Germany is Allemagne.
The German word for Germany is Deutschland.

Asking why all languages don't call Germany "Deutschland" is the same as asking why all languages don't call apples "Apfel".

Even within the same language, pronunciation changes by regional accent. Which region has the correct accent and which regions are kids taught to pronounce things incorrectly? Languages also change over time. The grammatical rules of English now aren't the same as they were 100 years ago. Is English more correct now or less correct?

Language is more like music than it is math.

  • The only people who would register would be janitors, mods, and admins. There are 4chan passes where you pay $20 a year to skip captchas and have a lower post cooldown which works by associating a token with an IP address. The token is emailed to you and you get reminder emails when the token is expiring so you can renew it. So 4chan would likely have emails for pass users too. Pass users still post anonymously. I don't know the exact stat but I remember the owner saying something like only 1% of users have a pass.

  • Sometimes I wonder how America voted in a fascist government and then I read comments like this. This is the same as wearing a white hood to a game with a black student. It is a direct threat against the student. It doesn't matter how passive they make the threat.

  • You underestimate how many people literally cannot stop themselves from playing Mario. I'd hope it's mostly children begging their parents, but I have a feeling there's a decent amount of 30 year olds with disposable income and zero impulse control in there.

  • Carney’s bad week

    Jump
  • You got farther than me! I stopped at this part

Carney effectively agreed with the ludicrous concept that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza. The Trudeau government was well known to have a soft spot for the Palestinian terrorists, but even they did not go that far.

  • I played through Part I and I could only imagine how much people complained. It's got US soldiers following orders to kill innocent people, a black woman as the leader of a paramilitary group, a rough and tough guy who only showed his soft side to his now dead husband, a group of religious nuts who are lead by a pedophile, and the whole thing is about vaccination against a deadly virus.

  • Thankfully most of my investments are in GICs (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) which are Canadian investments with a guaranteed return. Interest rates were jacked up recently and these were giving guaranteed returns of 5%+ which I thought was good enough. They've dropped to about 2.5% and I was thinking of moving more money into mutual funds. Good thing I didn't.

The only mutual fund I bought into is mostly based around US stocks. I bought in at $13.20 per unit and its now worth $12.40 per unit so a loss of $0.80 per unit. I have 800 units so that's currently a total loss of $640. At its height it was about $14.50 per unit which would have meant a total gain of $1,000. Even if the value dropped to $0 I'd still have plenty of savings so I'm not worried!

  • ProtonDB is a popular site for checking how well a game runs on Linux systems. Users upload reviews that rate the level of support along with their system specs.

I switched to Pop!_OS and I've rarely run into issues with games. Games with anti-cheat typically won't work. It seems like Escape from Tarkov doesn't work. It uses Battleye which requires special configuration to work on Linux and it seems the devs don't care to do that. Other games that use Battleye work fine.
