  • It can often get tense with them and I don't agree with some of their takes, but they are definitely a voice to consider seriously and worth arguing (in a polite way) with.

Unlike those conservative right echo chambers, most of them are actually educated, historically literate and smart, and they actually provide sources for their claims instead of hand waiving and using every falacy in the book.

  • There's a load of confusion in this thread.

What the post is about is compiler based clean code enforcement. JS doesn't do this, but your editor in combination with ESLint prevents you from running the program. However this isn't a general JS thing, just the way your setup works.

  • I'll speak from the perspective of Greece, which has mandatory military service for all males >= 18yo that lasts a full year.

It makes sense that the country needs conscripts and a population that knows how to fight, since we have a neighbor that doesn't play so nice with their surrounding countries.

However the way it's implemented is pure bullshit:

    • The actual training happens in the first few months, after that it's just free manual labour.
    • You get to deal with so much BS from the permanent staff, they have a huge superiority complex that you have to accept and play by in order to not have penalties or military prison.
    • You can't go home, can't see your loved ones, your life is basically shit except the days that you're given leave, which is around a month or so in total.
    • You get no sleep and work all day, it's a common phenomenon to sleep 3 hours every day.
    • It's unpaid. (it's actually 8.5 euro a month which is arguably worse than unpaid, it's like getting spat on the face)
    • You pay for lots of things, travelling to/from the base, buying food outside etc.
    • It's corrupt as fuck. There are so many people that know someone in the military or meet someone inside, and get very special treatment while the rest have to work twice as hard to cover up for them.
    • It is extremely hard to avoid it completely, there are parents with little kids that are missing from home for months because of it, there are poor people that can't afford not to be working but still have to go, there are mentally ill people that aren't given a full exclusion.

And it used to be much worse than this, we're the ones that "have it good"..

  • You seem like a reasonable guy, so I'll try to explain why I heavily disagree with some of these.

    • Billionaires should exist

I get the whole "they earned their money fairly" argument, but I can never justify morally the act of having more money than you, your children and grandchildren can ever know how to spend. Try to visualize a bit how much a billion is, it's a disgusting amount of money for a single person when you can spend them to help others in a meaningful way, like investing in healthcare to make it accessible for example.
    • People involved in abortions should consider the life of the fetus

Think of the common situations where people use abortion. It's usually young people who are not in a position to raise a child, people who are a bad couple or not even a couple to begin with, that aren't suitable to raise a child together, poor people that can't afford to raise a child properly, and cases where the fetus has a life altering problem.

In all of these cases, you are prioritizing a fetus over the whole life of a person who will grow up much much worse than an average child.

People involved in abortions should consider the life of the mother

Isn't this a conflicting view with the other one? Which one should you prioritize if the mother is too young to bear a child, the mother who is a grown person with memories, hopes and dreams, a personality, a family etc., or the fetus which doesn't really perceive anything that's going on at the moment?

    • Climate change is only going to affect coastal areas in a lot of years

Have you not seen what's going on all around the world? Fires everywhere, whirlwinds, floods, all more common than they have ever been. And are you willing to bet that it's not going to become even worse as it goes on? Because I'm willing to bet that if we don't fix it very very soon, then climate migrations, wars and famine might even be close enough for us or our children to experience.

  • I can't believe it's been so many years and there still aren't any laws regarding working in the office while sick. For office jobs it just makes zero sense, in this age they can all easily work from home more or less as seen during covid, isn't worth it not to have a plague of common colds every damn winter?

  • This is quite a relevant question for me. In Greece there isn't a lot of innovation and the government doesn't really give a shit to fix the root problems, all young people that can change the scene leave for better countries.

That leaves us with very few companies that do something respectable and are worth working for, and a ton of gambling companies that feed off of the uneducated people. Those gambling companies are making huge profits and doing very well in general, so working for them is usually a nice experience from what I've heard of.

It's often tempting, but I can't justify participating in this disgusting industry to get more money, benefits and time. It would never sit well with me, but it always feels unfair how many jobs there are for that industry compared to anything else.
