  • That is exactly the case. It is absolutely true and accusing me of lying is not okay.

  • You're both right and wrong.

Its like saying "saying a company is easy to run shows you have never run an huge company."

Both are false dychotomies. The amount of hosting costs, manpower, etc does not come from the project but how it is set up.

If you have to run servers for a software at all determines the cost for hosting for example. Same for every other aspect.

Linux is a huge software project I'm working on. Yet the cost of it is a joke compared to its size. It has way more users than plex.

  • Smb means you have to download the whole file. That isnt gonna fly in every configuration. But jellyfin does the trick easily.

  • Exactly. Thats why i use jellyfin now. Try installing it alongside. For me it worked well.

  • Damn. Thats a brutal report. Thanks for sharing. I was considering buying a plex pass due to the mobile apps fiasco, then came the remote thing and I thought nah. Now I'm happy i didnt

  • I have no idea what you're talking about but its definitely not a comparable situation.

  • From my view, a sustainable business model is very different from the way things are done lately. I built and managed multiple successful businesses and making them sustainable is doable without fucking over your customers.

They could absolutely have done a lot better things to gain more income. The important base question here is "how much do they need?" Because software does not have huge ongoing costs but massive initial costs and lower sustaining costs. Of course, large changes or complete makeorvers will be intense but they are not needed in every company.

Once that is clear, they could have started with better public relations, engaging people about the need for a specific sum or recurring revenue. They could have gamified it by selling badges, additional functions, tiers, restrictions on new installations, etc. But they didnt. They chose to paywall existing functions. one. After. The. Other.

    Dick move.

So yeah, building a business is no joke but thats not for me.

  • Yeah, there is no defence on enshittification, sorry. I have jellyfin now. Its also not remote which makes this a huge dick move too.

  • Yeah. I was a fan. I knew it would go down that road. When they paywalled remote clients i kinda smelled blood and started to try jellyfin. Best decision in hindsight.

  • Much too convenient to be "just" a glitch. Anyway, jellyfin works fine. Has been a good ride mostly.

  • Yeah no. That is local. But thanks for the suggestion. Jellyfin works well.

  • My networking is the same since i have plex (about 4 years). I now use jellyfin and it works well. But thanks for the suggestion.

  • interesting! Thanks for pointing that out. I did not mean to insert anything.

My point was that the mutual benefit imo is kinda economic, no? Making content is a job, content is a commodity. Just because no money flows does not mean there is no economy, or?

Well, the admin has to work, the moderators have to work. Thats a fact. i know that because i am both. its a lot of work if you want to do it right. yes, both make rules, hence hierarchy.

  • Okay. I think I disagree because autocrats let others work. It would be rule of the workers I think because those who build and maintain the instances and communities are in charge of maintaining them while the other "workers" who produce the content for everyones benefit are not in charge of the rules but are free to access the content at any time. I think as a word I would probably use socialist-syndicalism.

  • Last time, germany at least had the guts to spearhead the reich. This time they're just a bootlicker, following their imperialist friends.

  • In a capitalist system, all protests are violent because the capitalist system is violent by definition.

As long as we industrially murder people all around the globe, protests have not been successfull.

And nobody cares if women got the right to vote in this system. Its like making a party about women being able to join the NSDAP.

We are imperialist. We need to be stopped by any means necessary.

  • Thats pretty awesome. I'm excited to read it.

  • Honestly, as a man who usually is into women, I would also fall in love with someone who does this, no matter their gender.

  • Same. But plot twist: i need to be right that bad that i will spend considerable time researching if i find a differing opinion i cant defeat which leads me to completely change my opinion sometimes. Not just because I like knowing things but because I desperately want to be right. ;)

  • I'm used to imperfection. I just overlook it once I recognize it.

I personally didnt like the whole book "nr 5". Generally the whole rape, child molestation and such theme was not for me.

But all in all, I really like the theme otherwise. One of the most fleshed out stories I've encountered in years.
