In reality, you can easily just as easy make your own version of a community. The idea of community isnt that every person needs to listen to your ideas because youre brillant but that if you happen to find people centered around the same idea (which can also be less moderation), you wont be hindered by central admins.
The important part on mastodon is that you have the choice to join whatever place you want, look at the stuff you want, have moderation as much or less as you want and cant be forced to anything really.
The fedi in total is about freedom, not privacy. Privacy in public posts is pretty much nonexistent. The only "privacy" argument i can think of is you cant be forced to link accounts and you can make thousands which makes it hard to grasp who you are today.
I've had this discussion on a recent project. It is much more hassle than it is worth. Just host the server outside of that fascist hellhole and youre good.
Fascism isnt a political view either. Conservatism is a political view. It also cant be viewed the same as communism or socialism. One is based on feeding, housing and helping everyone while the other is tied to discriminating, abusing and even killing people of different ethnicity and ability.
Thats me a year ago. Now i run pretty much 100% foss, have converted some family, run a foss it business and help activists stay safe on electronic devices. I'm not joking. Lemmy was a big part in that.
Freedom of speech is entirely different from the populist/fascist viewpoint of being allowed to say literally anything. Freedom of speech is supposed to prevent the government from silencing dissent. Dissent and discriminating against minorities is entirely different.
Thats not how moderation works. Misinformation and Disinformation, especially about oppressed minorities have no space on lemmy. It is okay to not know it and read up on it but just because you dont double down doesnt mean the initial point must stay. Additionally, feel free to host your own instance with all the "varied views" you want.
Its not that hard. If hitler (or name your villain) made and kept improving a cancer drug and nobody else is taking up the mantle, you'd probably care more about keeping people alive (or in this case off of heroinbook and reddit) than the person.
Lets be honest, 2500 per dev is a joke. They could be making three times that if they just accepted one of the offers that are thrown at them BECAUSE of lemmy and other projects showing their skills.
Barely keeping them alive is not helping their views or anything they care about besides lemmy being improved. For transparency reasons I too would prefer to have separate fundraiser for ml directed at ml users but thats a different topic.
Another important point is that reddit stans would want you to hate tankies grrr and not donate so lemmy goes away as one of the few alternatives. A alone would fund these two if I could just because fuck reddit.
Took me a moment to understand the point. But I agree, from a transparency view alone. The users of .ml should be funding .ml, not the people trying to keep lemmy as a project alive. Generally, large insrances should be funding the project, not the project those instances imo.
