  • In ideal conditions they are. In less than ideal, they lack the flexibility required to adapt to a situation. Cruise in particular got caught blocking traffic for no good reason preventing emergency vehicles access.

The best an automated vehicle will do when unsure is stop. A human at least could listen to direction from a person of authority, even if those directions are counter to the rules (e.g. turn around in a one way street). It’s like a reverse Asimov’s law of robotics.

  • I’m not a fan of Musk but dumb luck will only get you so far. He’s been successful for too long to be a stumbling idiot. Maybe a successful market manipulator that never got caught, or a great salesman for his ventures, but I wouldn’t use idiot to describe him.

And the “he started with millions” doesn’t cut it fully either. He’s the richest man on earth, surely he had to bet on the right things more than once.

He just never should be at the helm of a company structured like Twitter was. Apparently Tesla built their VP level around Musk with great success.

  • Haven’t seen anyone mention this one, so let’s go.

The most fascinating cheese would be Casu Martzu (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casu_martzu). It is illegal to produce and consume pretty much everywhere, including in Sardinia where it is produced and was invented. It is the world most dangerous cheese, and people have died eating it.

The Wikipedia articles goes into how it is produced, but essentially you leave a good old pecorino outside with some rind removed to allow flies to put their eggs in the cheese. The larvae then consume the cheese and ferment it further. You need to eat it while the larvae are still alive, although the larvae can survive your digestive system and grow in our intestine. Traditionally you should eat the maggots, but you don’t have to.

I would never eat it, mind you, but it is definitely fascinating that such a thing exists.

  • I’m not putting the blame of a complete election on some kids. But voting is a personal responsibility everyone should take seriously.

And I agree that Gen X should have taught their kids better. But it’s too late now, so let’s work on the future generation(s).

  • All benefits included that’s likely to be true. A starting software engineer job out of college hits over 100k$ in salary alone. It’s probably offset by administrative roles, but still you can get past 500k$ with ten to twenty years of experience. Not unheard that top employees will have compensations in the million.

  • You’re right, but not for the reason you’re citing. Apple has its own T2 Secure Enclave which performs encryption. Microsoft relies on the TPM for hosting the keys, but does not use AFAIK hardware encryption and thus slows down significantly.

This article: https://eclecticlight.co/2023/03/03/whats-the-overhead-of-using-apfs-encryption/ shows that for an external drive the overhead on MacOS for encryption is insignificant (less than 5%) in most cases. That’s significantly better than Microsoft.
