  • Tawny Newsome: […] It’s a top tier season. In my top five of Lower Decks for sure.

Ha ha, see what she did there? [sobs]

  • "AI" went automatically to the list of so-called features that will make me drop a product like it's on fire:

    ❌ Uses "artificial intelligence"

❌ Needs an internet connection (barring actual computers)

    ❌ Always-on microphone/camera

❌ Phones home to manufacturer's or third party servers

❌ You buy the hardware, we lease you the software

    ❌ Fire hazard

    ❌ Toxicity and/or radiation

    ❌ Exposed wiring

    ❌ "Spring surprise" chocolate variant

    ❌ Actual killer bot

  • there’s a difference between voting down something because it’s not great in a community and because you’re trying to curate ALL

This right here 👆 ALL has its purposes, and none of those are "serving your individual perfect home feed". It becomes a tyranny of the norm. It is/was the biggest problem with Reddit, I'm surprised despite my own instincts to see that it has migrated here.

  • ...but will it fit on a 90 minute cassette tape?

  • I don't have a concrete suggestion for your use case, but IM doesn't seem like the most intuitive tool for this? If you're going to transfer files or data from one computer to another that is physically in the same room, maybe try a local network transfer instead of opening up an advanced web server with all kinds of moving parts?

I'd look at something like Sharedrop and see if there are alternatives that will offer a browser-based interface.

  • I was shocked by how small a share Debian has, until I realised this is specifically "distros for gaming"...

  • I'm not yucking your yums, but this is the first I've heard of falling asleep to the show itself. The Sleep with me podcast has some absolutely soporific TNG retellings, though.

  • In theory, there's a wide choice of software. As well as Flatpaks, Vanilla OS also has built-in support for Alpine, Debian, Fedora, Arch, and openSUSE packages via its own package-management wrapper called Apx… and it also claims support for the AppImage format, and an Android runtime based on Waydroid.

However, we couldn't get anything except Debian packages working in our testing.

this is a very bleeding-edge experimental distro, and in practice, we found it felt unfinished and not fully working.

    I'll pass for now.

  • no fedi version of Facebook

Friendica? Hubzilla? The former in particular felt very much like a FB-alike when I tried it several years ago.

  • They're 27"×40" posters in a limited print run and on good quality paper stock. Plus, the artist promises he'll ship as many different prints as you want at the same $10 rate. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

  • I only noticed now that McCoy is holding the Seventh Doctor's umbrella. 'Bones' McCoy, that is — not Sylvester. Good in-joke.

  • "Friendship is universal"

"Also, let's keep the Doctors and captains together in one block, separate from their actual friends up top" 😆

  • I misread the title and now I'm disappointed the manufacturers didn't sell the data for penis. Sorry, not sorry.

  • That sounds absolutely delightful. No new features, no intention of scaling or attracting bigger clients, just... Hobbit SAAS. 🙂

  • Sure, but it's the spice not the protein of a meal. The SNW producers seem to have it the other way round.

  • I missed that comment, but I still think it's a matter of semantics between atonement and redemption. In Disco the rest of the characters just shrugged it off with a "she was a mass murderer, but she was our mass murderer", and I find it rather disturbing that the franchise runners seem to do the same.

Like I said, Michelle Yeoh is a treasure, but the character of mirror Georgiou has been dialed up to maximum evil yet she's played for comic relief?

  • Yes, exactly. So they're either playing the redemption angle (which I don't buy) or they're just going "Massacres! They're wholesome!" (which is plain terrible and I don't see Yeoh going for it).

  • McMahan has appeared optimistic that there could be a chance of TV movie continuations, but I think the trailer hinting at an afterlife for the show is a tongue in cheek way of rallying fans for yet another "keep our show on the air" campaign 😆
