  • Yep, and it's even worse for mobile apps because people are so used to the terrible dollar-per-app model, despite the fact that these mobile apps are actually THE software they use everyday.

Apple and Google don't care, they get 30% cut regardless whether the dev makes $100 / sale or $1 / sale at higher volume. But it was a good strategy to shift the power over to the iOS and Android platforms because the perception is, dollar-per-app devs can't be that important, right? And they'll never get too big.

  • cloud gaming is not the ideal solution for 'access' for those that would have to otherwise wait.

It is very ideal and is perfect for those scenarios...

anectodal but when crysis dropped in 07. it was what spurred me to save and build a PC in 2011 just to play Crysis, finally, at max settings the way it was properly meant to be enjoyed.

Now this is not a scenario for regular people. Nobody I know would drop cash on a new PC just to play a single game at max settings. Most people are just content that games work at a decent enough setting on the devices / console they have and that is what Game Pass offers.

Comparing Game Pass to watching movies in 240p is a false analogy. Most games on Game Pass run just fine, especially for the devices people play it on.

  • You are talking as if Sync dev went and plastered ads all over Lemmy web app, Voyager, Infinity, Connect, Thunder etc.

Those are still ad-free, so people who love them can continue using them. Those who want to pay Sync can pay Sync. Lemmy platform remains unchanged. What's the problem?

You enjoy that first class crap. Edit: It's official, the $ync army consists of insufferable, ball sucking douchebags.

I do enjoy Sync and I hope to continue to. I ain't mad but you seem to be, I just don't understand why.

  • Preach. Not sure why this is so hard for folks to understand.

App development isn't and never has been an one-time done deal. Devs always do the work to fix bugs, add new features / requests, upgrade to new platform / API etc. If they do this for free that is at their will but they are burning their own time / money one way or another. To demand a developer to run their business a certain way and mandate their business model is just mind-blowing to me.

  • Just roll your own lists, that way you know where exactly the info is coming from, less risk of fake news. Kinda like making your own food at home vs eating out!

I like Axios for news, and News Minimalist which uses LLM to de-sensationalize news articles. Ars Technica for tech stuff.

Feeder is a nice RSS reader that works well for me.
